Fielding:

1. Field and flow

Learner: 28x year 8 male and female students at a developing level of skill in 7
groups of 4
Equipment: 14 cones, 7 soft cricket balls, 7 cricket tees and 7 sets of stumps
Space: a 60x60 meter space on oval
Time: 10-15 mins

Explanation:
Instructions
- Split class into groups of four
- Have 3 roles in each group (thrower, wicketkeeper and two fielders)

Wicket keeper/fielding drill

- all students will get into their positions for their role.
- Thrower will throw the ball to the wicketkeeper from 10 metres away.
- Once the wicketkeeper has received the ball they then throw the ball to the two fielders
either up high or down low
- the fielders then need to catch the ball using either overarm catch or underarm catch
- once they catch the ball they must return the ball to the thrower
- roles will then rotate as shown below
Rotate
Thrower à Wicket keeper à fielder
Focus on high and low catch
Run in pick up the ball

KTP’s:
Overarm Throw:
• Step, point, release and follow through
• Generate momentum through stepping forward onto opposite leg to opposite arm
• Follow through to maximum distance and accuracy of throw
• Face the target

Catching:
• Track, reach and give
• Create ‘M’ shape with fingers for low shape
• High catch, create ‘W’ shape with fingers
• Absorb velocity of the catch, by giving
• Position behind the ball
• Keep eyes on the ball
• Fingers spread apart to maximise surface area
Wicket keeping
• Positioned appropriate distance behind wickets depending on type of bowl
• Crouched positioned with low centre of gravity
• Fingers in diamond shape ready to catch the ball
• On the balls of the feet ready to dive in the direction of the ball
• Watch the ball into the gloves and ensure it is wrapped up quickly

Variations:
• increase the distance between thrower and wicketkeeper
• have the fielders once receiving the ball try to hit the wickets (if successful they can
receive points for hitting)

Individual progressions
Low ability:
• when the wicketkeeper throws the ball to the fielders, they can let fielders know
where they are throwing the ball, so they can prepare to either catch the ball high or
low
High ability:
• can pick up the ball and while running, throw the ball towards the
wicketkeeper/stumps
• Can vary the height and trajectory of the throw to fielders by wicketkeeper
2. Hit or Miss

Learner: 28x year 8 male and female students at a developing level of skill in 7
groups of 4
Equipment: 28 cones, 14 soft cricket balls, 14 sets of stumps
Space: a 60x60 meter space on oval
Time: 10-15 mins

Explanation:
• Students pair up and stand behind cones 10 meters apart in lines with cricket stumps
halfway between each member of the pair
• Students take turns underarm throwing the ball towards the stumps
• The opposite pair will trap the ball and then attempt to hit the stumps
• Players will have 6 throws each and then change to overarm throwing

KTP’s:
Overarm Throw:
• Step, point, release and follow through
• Generate momentum through stepping forward onto opposite leg to opposite arm
• Follow through to maximum distance and accuracy of throw
• Face the target

Overarm
Throw
• Step, point, release and follow through
• Generate momentum through stepping forward onto opposite leg to opposite arm
• Follow through to maximum distance and accuracy of throw
• Face the target
Fielding
• Foot behind the ball to minimise chance of missing it
• Fingers spread to increase size
• Body low and centre of gravity close to the ground
• Watch the ball

Variations:
• increase the distance between thrower and wicketkeeper
• have the fielders once receiving the ball try to hit the wickets (if successful they can
receive points for hitting)

Individual progressions
Low ability:
• Students who are struggling can take 5 steps in to make it easier to hit the wickets
High ability:
• Students can attempt to hit the stumps whilst running instead of stationary
3. Lane Work

Learner: 28x year 8 male and female students at a developing level of skill in 7
groups of 4
Equipment: 14 cones, 7 soft cricket balls
Space: a 20x20 meter space on oval
Time: 10-15 mins

Explanation:
• Students will make groups of 4 and line up in pairs, facing the other two group
members on a cone 8 meters away
• The pair at one end will roll the ball whilst the group at the other end will throw it
high for an over-head catch
• After 6 the two groups will swap roles again and this will continue until the activity is
finished

KTP’s:
Overarm Throw:
• Step, point, release and follow through
• Generate momentum through stepping forward onto opposite leg to opposite arm
• Follow through to maximum distance and accuracy of throw
• Face the target

Underarm Throw
• Step, stretch and swing
• Lean forward and push weight onto front foot prior to release
• Throw ball at low trajectory to minimise time spent in the air
• Look at target before releasing the throw

Catching:
• Track, reach and give
• Create ‘M’ shape with fingers for low shape
• High catch, create ‘W’ shape with fingers
• Absorb velocity of the catch, by giving
• Position behind the ball
• Keep eyes on the ball
• Fingers spread apart to maximise surface area

Fielding
• Foot behind the ball to minimise chance of missing it
• Fingers spread to increase size
• Body low and centre of gravity close to the ground
• Watch the ball
Variations:
• increase the distance between throwers and speed of throws

Individual progressions
Low ability:
• Low achievers can receive slower rolls and underarm throws to make it easier for
them to participate
High ability:
• Students wo are finding the activity easy can receive the ball on the run rather than
waiting for the ball
4. Roll or Bowl

Learner: 28x year 8 male and female students at a developing level of skill in 4
groups of 7
Equipment: 16 cones, 8 soft cricket balls, 4 wickets
Space: 10x10 meter space on oval
Time: 10-15 mins

Explanation:
• Students are in groups of 7 in 3x3 squares with 2 sets of wickets in each square with
a 3m gap between squares
• Students roll or softly bowl the ball through the squares of any of the other squares
• If students bounce the ball through they receive 1 point, if they roll it through 2
points and if they hit the wickets it is 6 points
• At the end of 3 minutes the scores will be tallied, and one team will be the winner,
this will be received
• Students will have 3 seconds to dispose of the ball once they have it

Fielding
• Foot behind the ball to minimise chance of missing it
• Fingers spread to increase size
• Body low and centre of gravity close to the ground
• Watch the ball

Variations:
• increase the distance between throwers and speed of throws

Individual progressions
Low ability:
• Low achievers can have 10 seconds to use the ball, insead of 3
High ability:
• Students who are advanced can attempt to use their opposite hand
