Exploring Adaptable Spaces in Modular Architecture - SEM:- 8 YEAR:- 4

Sub Title –
Housing for Economically Weaker Section Mumbai, Maharashtra

Background –
People are adaptive they intend to be adapt to the surrounding lifestyle and living space. So according to it our
living space should be adaptive to changing needs such as expanding families, tendency to migrate and changing work
place oriented lifestyle. This problem can be resolved by providing flexible dwelling units.

Flexible dwelling are homes that allow for adaptation based upon changes in the user’s routine. Flexibility in
dwelling can enhance connection to a place and community, and readily support changes in individual everyday life and
life cycle. Multi-family homes today are generally designed to be a compilation of similar units. These type of dwelling
aren’t able to respond to change and causes the user to feel bounded. Flexibility in now ever dwellings can provide
inhabitants with: a greater level of comfort, more cost efficient units.

Mumbai is one of the most crowded city in India, as it has many business hub and costal region. It is developing
very fast and development comes by maintaining city with respect of structure, road networks, services and many more.
So as to maintain this aspects there’s a need for people who can maintain city development, mostly the workers working
for the government in sector of maintaining the city growth are mostly economically weaker section, which increases
the population of the people in economically weaker section.

Problem Statement –
The people who are economically weaker are the key members of the high income group peoples. They are both
depended on each other. Government is providing housing to economically weaker sections but most of the hosing
scheme is empty or the owners provide their unit on rent. The main reason behind it is that they are capable of buying a
single unit but what in future when their family is going to expand at that time they will not be able to buy a new unit.
So by providing them with the unit which can be adaptable to their need and can be incremental by the time, this will
solve their housing problem.

Aim –
To meet the constantly changing environment and needs of spaces through architecture.

Objective –
To accomplish the aim following objective are needed:-

- To accommodate the data of the people surrounding the area, their cast, lifestyle and their means of income.

- To provide a dwelling unit in which user can change the spaces as they need.

- To find the material which can easily be pre casted and cast with less cost.

- To find the various means of modularization with adaptable use.

Design Project –
This project will aim to provide modular adaptive housing for weaker section in Kakinada. This project will
provide a dwelling unit in which the user can develop the living space according to their need and can also transport
from place to place.

Methodology –
- To study people’s perception towards the space.

- To study means of adaptive use of space.

- To study the means of modular adaptive techniques.

Identified Case Study –

- Traditional Japanese House by Kazuhiko and Kaoru Obayashi

System of Flexibility – Light weight wall sliding partition, modular approach to design, interlinked functions.

- O₂ Village – Modular Housing

System of Flexibility – It is a cluster of 6 units, 150mm steel tubes are used create the support frame and
facilities everything from single unit to multi storey units.

- R- 128 House

System of Flexibility – The structure is modular by bolting together steel frame with continuous suspended
glass wall on all the sides of the building. All the components can be disassembling for reuse in the same manner or a
completely different building design.

Expected Outcome –
This project will decrease the gap between the communities. This project will help residing people to adapt to
the environment and their living space, and decrease the insecurity of leaving their dwelling unit.

Scope and Limitation –

The scope of the study will provide the design of the dwelling unit which will be modular and adaptive
according to the user requirement. The limitation of this project will be that there will not be versatility in terms of
designing the units.
Program –
- 1 person: This is composed by a single-person household; it may be formed by people who choose to live
alone or a divorced person. .
- 2 people: This is composed by a single-parent family or couples without children, siblings, and partners.
- 3 people: This is composed by couples who have only one child or a number of young people who live
together.
- 4 people: Family with two children or a family with one child and an elderly person.
- 5 or more people: Larger families or 5 people sharing a house.
