Information Technology & Internet Survey for

B.Ed Students
Introduction
Throughout the world, information and communications technologies
(ICTs) are changing the face of education. It has been argued that the
transformation of education may be the most important of the many
practical revolutions sparked by computer technology. Just as computers
are about to replace books (some would argue this has already happened)
as our main repository of information globally, computers will come to
occupy the central position in education once occupied by books1.

A guiding principle in the integration of Information Technology in the

Education System should be evidence-based policy formulation. It has
been acknowledged that “whichever part of the public sector one is
concerned with, one’s observation is clear: the current state of research-
based knowledge is insufficient to inform many areas of policy and
practice2”.

In this regard, this survey seeks to capture critical empirical data on the
use of ICT by B.Ed trainees and usage of ICT in B.Ed colleges. The
objective of the survey is to examine the use of Computers and the
Internet, and in particular to determine:

1. The extent of use of Computers and the Internet by teacher trainees at

college;
2. The extent of use of Computers and the Internet by teacher trainees for
creating instructional
material; communicating with peers; accessing information for lesson
planning; multi-media classroom presentations; accessing research and
best practice for teaching and accessing model lesson plans;
3. Barriers to the use of Computers and the Internet by teacher trainees;
4. Perceived benefits to the use of Computers and the Internet by teacher
trainees.
5. Levels of Computer proficiency of teacher trainees.

The results of this survey will be extremely useful in the preparation of

Strategies and Action Plans for updating the existing “Policies for the
Integration of ICT in the Education System” as well as the curriculum and
pedagogical changes in the teaching of ICT as a subject and the
integration of ICT in the teaching and learning of all subject areas. The
Survey findings will also be useful in the formulation of national initiatives
aimed at increasing the use of computers by teacher trainees and teacher
educators.

As an Educator, your participation in this survey is critical to improve the

existing policies, strategies and action plans that would enable the
effective and appropriate integration of Information Technology in the
education system especially in Teacher training programme.

1
Please note that all information collected from B.Ed colleges and
individuals will be treated with the strictest of confidence and anonymity
is guaranteed as any reporting on the survey will not make reference to
any specific college, teacher educator or teacher trainee.

Finally this survey is for the requirement of my final year M.Ed degree
programme, KSOU, Mysore.

Thank you for taking the time to participate in this survey and for
your invaluable input in this exercise.
