CHAPTER I
The Problem and Its Background
Introduction
“To utilize social media tools effectively and properly, you must absolutely

generate spontaneous communications in direct response to what others are saying or to

what is happening in that moment. Be yourself. Be conversational. Be engaged.” Social

media to its definition; is the collective of online communications channels dedicated to

community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and collaboration. Many people are

utilized in terms of Social Media because its purpose to communicate throughout the

world to make people interact each other. Being a millennial person that was recognized

in this world. It was a part and parcel of everyone’s life. Social media is becoming an

integral part of life online as social websites and applications proliferate. Most traditional

online media include social components, such as comment fields for users. In business,

social media is used to market products, promote brands, connect to current customers

and foster new business.

“Social media is not a media. The key is to listen, engage, and build

relationships.” People get connected to social media because it has a significance which

the people makes self engage and interact continuously. In forward to this, Social Media

is not a media thus it plays the essential part of continuous growth of modernization of

our world. The complex thing that we know throughout this era.

In this 21st Century, we notice that Social Media upgrades at its finest. Social

Media from its history, letters were the earliest form of postal service dates back to 550

primitive delivery system would become more widespread and streamlined in future

centuries until its microcomputers that was totally used in our society. Social media is

used for many purposes which are to exchange ideas, feelings, personal information,

pictures and videos. The reason for this huge growth until today because social networks

feed off interactions among people, they become more powerful as they grow. Without

social media, social, ethical, environmental and political ills would have minimal

visibility. Increased visibility of issues has shifted the balance of power from the hands of

a few to the masses. So that's why social media plays a vital part of this society growth.

There are many kinds of Social Media was taken to this generation. Social Media

as a marketing tool used to interact and upgrade products through the digital tools that

were made to this generation. By using it, strategies were recognized and utmost widely

spread to this marketing world. Such as social networking sites and social shopping

networks. Another, Social Media as an blogging and publishing networks. Content

marketing is one of the most powerful ways to target, attract, engage and convert a target

audience. It is going to be the base of successful online marketing campaigns that play

the most important role in conversion funnels of Digital Marketing campaigns. That's

why many people are publishing their story to produce commercializing. Another, Social

Media as an Education through this 21st century. Social media is growing rapidly with

some social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter carrying a particularly high

population of members. This research paper critically analyses the factors surrounding

the use of social media in education. The pros and cons of using social media in

education has also been given a distinct consideration. It discusses the advantages and

disadvantages of social media in education as well its role in education. With the

changing times, it is, therefore, necessary to study the nature of education having factored

social media. Social media also serves to expose students to various tools that contribute

towards the rapid growth of the educational process. The students should be taught the

strength and weakness of such educational tools and have the chance to use them at any

time they feel like doing so. With social media, the students can also perform group

discussions in the form of chats. Such tools are extremely relevant to the development of

education. Social media are also instrumental in developing the teaching techniques used

by teachers. With social media development, it has been possible for teachers to have

online classes that are broadcast via social networks such as Skype (Carlson, 2005). It

also serves the broader learning on the world of Education that produces the Online

Education that students learn in their houses with spending their families and leisure time.

Social Media was totally influence and contributed in our generation but there are

some issues that regarding the Pros and Cons of it. Nowadays coming across kids on

social networking sites has become a norm. Informal understandings that govern the

behaviour of members of a society. Social networking sites is one of the most preferable

medium for expressing feelings, thoughts and talents as we could obtain respond

immediately from people all over the world. On the other hand, the more social media we

have, the more we think we're connecting, yet we’re really disconnecting from each

other. Communication is a crucial part of the human life when it comes to interacting and

progressing our society.

Social networking makes keeping in touch with a vast circle of friends easier.

Anyone can send personal emails and letters to individuals, or post a simple message for

everyone to see at once. They can let everyone know where they are, what they’re doing

and how they’re feeling and it only takes a few seconds yet the significant amount of

social media users would be teenagers which include students. That's why numerous

researches are being done to find out on the effects of social media in teenagers’ life.

The rise of social media in the classroom isn't about how many people "like" your

posts. The collaborative environment and open forum that social media encourages, along

with the rapid-pace of information sharing that it facilitates, means that students can

accelerate the development of their creative, critical thinking, and communication

processes in certain ways when they use it. Social learning is active learning, which

means the directly learning of people in their own learning than passively absorbed

information from the previous path of lessons that are tackled. Social media shapes and

presents information in a way that makes sense to and excites students more than

traditional tools do. Furthermore, the engagement of students was deeply satisfied if they

put more effort both in work and online presence. Social media platforms use the key to

uphold the information's and post that given to them. According to a recent study, more

and more teachers and professors are incorporating social media into their classrooms to

engage students and support their educational development, whether online or in person

which makes students and teachers more effectively interact each other to fulfil the

learning that we gain in both parties.

If used with intention, social media can positively influence the way each

individual learns and absorbs information in the classroom. Incorporating social media

into a more traditional learning environment can expand students' creative freedom and

encourage them to work harder and engage more. Of course, as the social media

landscape changes, classrooms will also need to adapt – but with social media already

impacting the way we learn and interact outside of the classroom, applications within the

classroom will likely only increase. Gives us easy access on internet that are very helpful

and very much informative.

In this research, we are focusing to the our dear school, St. Augustine College on

what is the role of using social media as an learning tool between the process of learning

and online presence effectively of students and teacher to apply the concept of

"engagement". How does SASN - QC students manage the time between social media

apps / networking sites and in real life situation where learning is taking upon the

experiences happening in some scenarios. Learning is acquired at the time of its nurture.

How does it develops, contributes and affect one's personality by using it and why it is

very broad to determine the factors that influence learning by using Social media.

Social Media is one of the factors that affect the cultural growth and changing

one's esteem to participate it. Social media learning shapes the future of the users to join

the innovation of our generation in this 21st century. It changes the way of people on how

it feels in a real life and in a online world.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter presents the review of literature of Effects of Online Education to the

Learning Ability of Grade 12 students of St. Augustine School of Nursing Quezon

Citywhich have direct and indirect bearing of the study the literature of the study center

on the discussion of behavior of Grade 12 students.

This review consist of articles, documents, books, survey that focus on the same

subject matter of other concepts of the study this will also guide the researchers to

achieve their objectives by getting ideas on other related studies and make improvements.

Foreign Literature

The study of Aliza Sherman(2018), To utilize social media tools effectively and

properly, you must absolutely generate spontaneous communications indirect response to

what others are saying or to what is happening in that moment. Be yourself. Be

conversational. Be engaged.

The study of David Alston (2017), “Social media is not a media. The key

is to listen, engage, and build relationships.”

According to Ashton Univeristy, If used with intention, social media can

positively influence the way each individual learns and absorbs information in the

classroom. Incorporating social media in to a more traditional learning environment can

expand students' creative freedom and encourage them to work harder and engage more.

Of course, as the social media landscape changes, classrooms will also need to adapt–but

with social media already impacting the way we learn and interact outside of the

classroom, applications within the classroom will likely only increase. Gives us easy

access on internet that are very helpful and very much informative.

The study of Kaplan & Haenlein (2010), It is as if we don’t exist if we arenot

in the social media. Some industry gurus claim that if you don’t participate in social

media, “you are not part of the cyberspace anymore”.

According to Lepi (2012) identified some ways in which teachers can integrate

social media as a learning tool. Facebook can be used to a) improve communication by

allowing students to easily message teachers and other students with questions; and b)

schedule events, post notesand remind students of assignment due dates while Twitter

can be used to post supplementary materials like links to articles and videos so students

can continue learning even when class is over. Instagram is another social media platform

that allows teachers and students to easily share images with each other while YouTube is

a popular free video sharing service that can be used by students as a tool for their video

project presentations and for teachers to upload learning materials for their students.

The study of Powers, Alhussain, Averbeck, & Warner, (2012), Social media

networks enable online learners to define what and howthey want to learn as they choose

their own tools, pursue their own content, and establish social networks to help support

them.

The study of Powers, et. al. (2012), Social media and the Web 2.0 tools

becomes “the enablers that bring the learning community together, however it is defined

by the learner, and provides the framework that allows online learners and teachers to

harness the power of collaborative, personal learning”.

According to Blaschke, (2014) & Balakrishnan, (2015). Social media not only

provides educators with an opportunity to engage learners in the online classroom but

also to support development of learner skills and competencies (Blaschke, 2014) and to

provide an effective channel to reach out to online learners and close the generation gap.

According to Ozmen & Atici (2014). Combining the learning management

system (LMS) with social media provides more student engagement, personal interaction,

communication, peer-to-peer feedback, and social experience in distance education.

According to Mason & Rennie (2008). Knowledge is no longer acquired in a

linear manner, and there is a need to derive our competence from forming connections

with other people.

Local Literature

According to Rappler (2018), The most interesting part of the study is that even

after 3 years, Filipinos are still on top when it comes to social media usage on any device,

averaging almost 4 hours everyday – 3 hours and 57 minutes a day, to be specific.

According to Manila Times (2016) he Philippines should not be left behind when

it comes to applying education technology. The ethical and responsible use of computers,

tablets, cellphones and other devices can greatly enhance the learning capability of

students, for it has been shown through studies that children (and adults for that matter)

can better grasp and understand their lessons in a more relaxed environment, without the

prying (and sometimes mocking) eyes of classmates or teachers.

According to Marcial (2016); Serrano & Yambao (2015), At the University of the

Philippines Open University (UPOU) where most classes are conducted online, recent

studies were done on how social media is being used as learning tools. Marcial (2016)

identified the practices of faculty members at a university in the Philippines in terms of

using social media in higher education. While, Serrano & Yambao(2015) determined

how students maximized social media as a venue for online collaboration.

The study of Gomez (2016) said that the e-learning is not only about sophisticated

platforms where teachers and students can meet up in a digital space interact. E-Learning

has to do with any learning that uses technology to enhance the learner experiences.

The study of Domingo (2016) The Philippines has been cited as one of the top 10

countries in the world in terms of high growth in “e-learning” revenues in the next few

years, according to global report by US- based market research firm Ambient

Insight.Ambient Insight said in a statement that in Asia alone, the market for learning and

training programs supported by electronic technology is expected to reach $11.5 billion

by 2016, or more than twice the $5.2 billion in 2011.

According to Philippine Star, almost all Filipino internet users are using social

media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

According to House of I.T (2018), being involved in social media (social

networking) is one of the most active web-based activities in the Philippines. Because of

this, Filipinos are declared to be the most active users on a number of web-based social

network sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. The use of social

networking websites has become so extensive that the country is now called “The Social

Networking Capital of the World.” In fact, social media related activities are also used in

the Philippines as a form of election campaign material, as well as political, marketing

and propaganda tools.

The study of House of I.T (2018), Facebook is the most active social media

platform with 26%, followed by Facebook Messenger with 23%, while Twitter and

Instagram also top the list with 13% and 12%. Filipinos with ages 20-29 years old are the

most active users on Facebook.

The article of Torrevillas, Philippine Star (2017) “Another positive impact of

social networking sites is to unite people on a huge platform for the achievement of some

specific objective. This is very important to bring the positive change in society.”
St. Agustine College Quezon City Campus

The article of Torrevillas, Philippine Star (2017) “Spending countless hours on

the social sites can divert the focus and attention from a particular task. It lowers the

motivational level of the people, especially of the teenagers and students. They mainly

rely on technology and the internet instead of learning the practical knowledge and

expertise of the everyday life.”
