Van Nicholas uses two different titanium alloys
in its titanium frames. The manufacturer of the
titanium tubing used in Van Nicholas frames
adheres to the strict ISO9002: 1994 standards
for quality, trusted by the nations top aerospace
and defense contractors.
The Ti 3-2.5 tubing is the same high
strength material used in the most advanced
aerospace applications. It is drawn seamless
tubing, which can be welded to join the tubes
of the bike frame together. The tubes are cold
worked to provide additional strength to the
material and through this process is tailored to
provide the correct shape tubing for the frame
design. This provides an extremely lightweight
and strong racing machine, where the geometry
of the frame is tailored by working the tube sets
to create the perfect ride.
The Ti 6-4 tubing used in the “Aeolus”
frame is a seamless tube-set drawn from the
high strength aerospace alloy. Most other
manufacturers use a welded tube set which is
created by taking rolled sheet, forming it into a
tube shape, and then welding it together.
This creates a substantially weaker tube-set
than drawn tubing, as the entire tube must be
welded together. During the welding process
the metal undergoes structural changes due
to the applied heat, and produces a heat
affected zone (HAZ) around the weld area. This
fabrication process and resulting HAZ can lead
to failure of the frame, and decreased torsional
rigidity of the tube-set.

and material selection process very seriously,
creating the best product possible for the
intended application; making bikes go fast.
These are just a few of the reasons why Van

irrespective of changes in fashion.
Titanium ride quality from the combina-
tion of high strength and material formability,
avoids an overly stiff frame.
Titanium is long lasting due to crash
damage tolerance, anti-corrosion performance
and material fatigue properties. Fatigue life and
corrosion resistance is the best of any frame
material in the world.
Titanium has an excellent combination
of strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight.
Using thin wall 0.8/0.9 mm titanium allows
good fatigue life, but can avoid a harsh ride
due to the inbuilt flexing that soaks up road
vibration.
Titanium will remain a premium material
based on production processes required for
manufacture and welding.
Every frame we make is custom drawn,
each tube set is designed to maximize strength
and performance by using differing thickness
of tubing in addition to utilizing ovalization, and
biaxial ovalized tubing
