Saludo a los
peruanos y amigos
del Perú
Hace poco más de dos meses asumí la Embajada del
Perú en Sudáfrica, con el objetivo de acercar más a
los gobiernos, las instituciones, las empresas y los
pueblos de ambos países.
Con el equipo de trabajo que me acompaña en esta
tarea, consideramos que el primer paso que
debíamos dar para alcanzar este objetivo era
mejorar la comunicación. Es en este marco que hoy
lanzamos el Boletín de la Embajada del Perú en
Sudáfrica, para acercarnos a los amigos del Perú y a
nuestra comunidad en este país, e informarles, en
permanente diálogo,sobre los avances que  country and engage them in permanent dialogue
realicemos en los  esfuerzos por vincular más al
Perú y Sudáfrica.
Con las autoridades e instituciones oficiales
reforzaremos los puntos en común, con los
empresarios buscaremos encontrar negocios de
mutuo interés y con los ciudadanos debemos
procurar alcanzar un mayor conocimiento de
nuestra historia, cultura y potencial turístico.
La Embajada será la expresión del sentimiento, la
cultura y del saber de nuestro país, pero en ello no
estamos solos, ya que nos sentimos fortalecidos por
la presencia de cientos de peruanos que nos
acompañan en Sudáfrica, Mozambique, Zambia, y
los países vecinos, enriqueciendo con su esfuerzo y
creatividad al Perú y al país que los acoge.

Greetings to the
Peruvians and friends
of Peru
A little more than two months ago I assumed my
official duties at the Embassy of Peru in South Africa,
with the objective of bringing the government and the
private sectors and the people of both countries
closer together.
 
With the work team behind me in this task, I believe
that the first step to take in order to achieve this goal
is to improve the communication. It is in this
framework that today we launch the Newsletter of the
Embassy of Peru in South Africa to approach the
friends of Peru and our community residing in this
regarding the progress and effort to link Peru and
South Africa further.
In this view, together with the government and
private sector we will strengthen the common points
with the businessmen in seeking to find businesses of
mutual interest.  We also intend to reach the citizens
and provide with them with a greater knowledge of
our history, culture and tourist potential.
The Embassy will be the expression of the feeling,
culture and knowledge of our country, but in this
effort we are not alone, as this feel will be
strengthened by the presence of hundreds of
Peruvians who reside with us in South Africa,
Mozambique, Zambia and in neighbouring countries
enriching Peru with its effort and creativity and the
country that welcomes them.

Cartas Credenciales
En diciembre de 2018, el embajador Jorge Félix Rubio presentó sus cartas credenciales,
oportunidad en la que hizo llegar al presidente Ramaphosa el saludo del presidente
Martín Vizcarra, y mencionó el interés del gobierno de fortalecer las relaciones
bilaterales, trabajar conjuntamente en la promoción y defensa de la democracia, la lucha
contra la corrupción, así como en el Consejo de Seguridad de Naciones Unidas, en
donde están presentes el Perú y Sudáfrica,  y en todos los temas de carácter
multilateral en los que tenemos intereses comunes.  El presidente Ramaphosa manifestó
su mayor interés en trabajar con nuestro país en todos los temas mencionados.

Credential Letters
In December 2018, Ambassador Jorge Félix Rubio presented his credentials, an
opportunity in which he conveyed the greetings of H.E. President Martín Vizcarra
to H.E. President Cyril Ramaphosa mentioning the government's interest in
strengthening bilateral relations and working together on promotion and defence
of democracy, the fight against corruption as well as in the Security Council of the
United Nations where Peru and South Africa are present and also in all multilateral
issues in which we have common interests.  President Ramaphosa expressed his
greatest interest in working with our country on all the aforementioned issues.

Actividades de la Embajada Activities of the Embassy

El equipo de la Embajada se reunió en el mes de enero con DIRCO, para
tratar asuntos bilaterales y regionales. Uno de los primeros resultados que
se espera alcanzar en breve plazo es la firma del “Memorándum de
Entendimiento para el establecimiento de Consultas Políticas”,
instrumento que permitirá la pronta firma de acuerdos de cooperación en
las áreas cultural, judicial, medio ambiente, educación, lucha contra las
drogas, cooperación sur-sur, entre otros.
También se sostuvo una reunión con el Departamento de Comercio e
Inversiones, Dirección de América, para tratar el desarrollo del comercio e
inversiones entre ambos países y el avance de los acuerdos de libre
comercio en la región africana. Se espera para este año misiones
comerciales recíprocas que eleven nuestro comercio bilateral.
En el mes de febrero se realizó la visita a Ciudad del Cabo para participar
en el State of the Nation Adress -SONA-, la presentación del presidente
Ramaphosa ante el Congreso sudafricano. La visita permitió también tener
distintas reuniones con: miembros de la comunidad peruana en dicha
ciudad; mineros peruanos con inversiones en Zambia; el Cape Town Press
Club; la Universidad de Ciudad del Cabo; el Premier y gobierno de de la
Provincia del Cabo Oriental; entre otras.
The Embassy team met in January with DIRCO to discuss bilateral and
regional issues. One of the first results that is expected to be reached
soon is the signing of the "Memorandum of Understanding for the
establishment of Political Consultations", an instrument that will allow the
early signature of cooperation agreements in the areas of culture, justice,
environment, education, fight against drugs, south-south cooperation
among others.
A meeting was also held with the Department of Trade and Investment-
Directorate of America- to discuss the development of trade and
investment between the two countries and the advancement of free trade
agreements in the African region. This year, reciprocal trade missions are
expected to boost our bilateral trade.
In the month of February, a visit to Cape Town was made to participate in
the Opening of the South African Parliament and State of the Nation
Address -SONA- by H.E. President Cyril Ramaphosa. This visit also allowed
for different meetings with members of the Peruvian community in that
city; Peruvian miners with investments in Zambia; the Cape Town Press
Club; the University of Cape Town; the Premier and government of the
Western Cape; among other.

REFERENDUM 2018
El día 09 de diciembre de 2018, los peruanos residentes en Sudáfrica participaron en el
REFERÉNDUM  2018, en el cual se le consultó a la ciudadanía sobre las siguientes cuatro
leyes de reforma constitucional aprobadas por el Pleno del Congreso de la República: Ley
de reforma constitucional sobre la conformación y funciones de la Junta Nacional de
Justicia; Ley que modifica el artículo 35 de la Constitución Política del Perú para regular el
financiamiento de las organizaciones políticas; Ley de reforma constitucional que prohíbe
la reelección inmediata de parlamentarios de la República y Ley que modifica diversos
artículos de la Constitución Política de 1993, para establecer la bicameralidad dentro de la
estructura del Congreso de la República.

En dicho Referéndum se habilitaron dos mesas de votaciones: una situada en

Johannesburgo, y la otra en Pretoria.

REFERENDUM 2018
On December 09th, 2018, Peruvians living in South Africa participated in the REFERENDUM
2018, in which the citizens were asked about the reform of the following four laws
approved by the Plenary of the Congress of the Republic: Constitutional reform law on the
conformation and functions of the National Board of Justice; Law that modifies article 35
of the Political Constitution of Peru to regulate the financing of political organizations;
Law of constitutional reform that prohibits the immediate reelection of parliamentarians
of the Republic and Law that modifies various articles of the Political Constitution of 1993,
to establish the bi-chamber structure within the Congress of the Republic.

Two voting tables were set up In this Referendum, : one located in Johannesburg and the
other in Pretoria.

Amistad Perú – Sudáfrica:
Un peruano enseñando
matemática en Sudáfrica

Llegué a   Sudáfrica en el   2006 cuando   mi papá, Juan Miguel
Miranda, fue   nombrado a la   Embajada del   Perú aquí.   Miranda, was appointed to the Embassy of Peru here. I
Completé mis estudios secundarios, universitarios y me casé
con sudafricana en Pretoria en el 2017. Ahora, dirijo una ONG
de educación, ClickMaths.
Mis experiencias en Sudáfrica me han permitido conocer el
sistema de educación y ver que necesita mejorar
sustantivamente en cuanto a la calidad de rendimiento
académico, especialmente en matemáticas. No cabe duda que
las oportunidades educativas siguen siendo muy marcadas por
la desigualdad en la sociedad sudafricana.
Por eso, en los últimos tres años, en ClickMaths hemos estado
trabajando en cómo se puede enfrentar algunos de estos
problemas y nivelar el sistema para los alumnos en todo el país,
utilizando la tecnología para brindar apoyo a alumnos de
cualquier edad. Por esa razón, se decidió trabajar con los
mejores recursos gratuitos del mundo, The Khan Academy,
traduciendo los videos de enseñanza de matemáticas en Zulú y
Xhosa, los dos idiomas más hablados en el país además del
inglés. Los videos enseñan matemáticas desde el uno más uno,
hasta nivel universitario. Ahora estamos trabajando con estos
recursos offline para brindar programas a colegios, centros
comunitarios y centros de educación adulta. Los programas
permiten a los alumnos reforzar los conceptos básicos y aplicar
estos mismos conceptos en ejercicios interactivos en la misma
plataforma.
Desde el 2016, al frente de ClickMaths he trabajado con miles
de alumnos en la provincia de Gauteng y KwaZulu-Natal y
hemos logrado un aumento de 15% de mejoras en los promedios
de matemáticas de los alumnos con los que hemos trabajado.
Ahora estamos buscando más apoyo para expandir los
programas y obtener estos recursos y oportunidades para más

Peru - South Africa Friendship:
A Peruvian teaching
mathematics in South Africa

I arrived in South Africa in 2006 when my father, Juan Miguel
completed my high school and university studies and later
married a South African in Pretoria in 2017.  I now lead an
education NGO, called ClickMaths.
My experiences in South Africa have allowed me to know the
education system and see that it needs to improve
substantively in terms of the quality of academic performance,
especially in mathematics. There is no doubt that educational
opportunities are still very marked by inequality in South
African society.
Therefore, in the last three years, at ClickMaths we have been
working on how to address some of these problems and level
the system for students across the country, using technology
to support students of any age. For that reason, it was decided
to work with the best free resources in the world, The Khan
Academy, translating the videos of teaching mathematics in
Zulu and Xhosa, the two most spoken languages in the country
besides English. The videos teach mathematics from primary
school to university level. We are now working with these
offline resources to provide programs to schools, community
centres and adult education centres. The programs allow
students to reinforce the basic concepts and apply these same
concepts in interactive exercises on the same platform.
 
Since 2016, at the helm of ClickMaths, I have worked with
thousands of students in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal
provinces and have achieved a 15% improvement in the average
mathematics of the students we have worked with.
Now we are looking for more support to expand the programs
and get these resources and opportunities to more students. If
