Television
Many years ago, my mother, being very opposed to television, refused to buy a TV for our house, saying it
was “the Devil’s Tool”. It was the spring of 1969, when she finally broke down, and they bought a little used
black and white TV. We all became immediately addicted, spending every spare minute glued to the “boob
tube”. It is interesting that 40 years later I have to agree with her, but for somewhat different reasons.
National Public Radio recently had a story that some 30 studies over the last three decades have shown
that excessive “screen time” (TV, video games, and computers) is definitely detrimental to humans physically,
mentally, and spiritually.

FREE APPRAISALS!
Last year I attended a seminar on adolescent health. One presenter showed that obese children under
age15 had an average screen time of 5.5 hours per day compared to other kids with 1.5 hours of screen time
per day.
Research indicates that there is an 80% chance that an overweight adolescent will become an obese adult.
Much disease, lots of agony, and over 300,000 deaths can be attributed to obesity and weight issues in the
United States every year.
Another serious issue is mental, emotional problems related to exposure to violent situations. While the
average person in their life will seldom or never experience a violent death, the
current 18 year old will have experienced, through the magic of television, over
40,000 violent deaths. I think that insomnia, night terrors, ADHD, depression,
anxiety, and many more unhealthy conditions are related to our experiences with
television.
There are certainly huge benefits from TV also and I think most of us are more
educated today than we would be without it, but…
So maybe we should voluntarily shut it down sometimes, reduce the screen time,
and switch to more wholesome programming. Barb and I stopped our dish service
and only watch a rented movie now and then. I am amazed at how much more I get
done, how much more sleep I get, and how much better I feel.
Yes, Mom, you were right, again.
