for participating in the 2017 Ottawa County Youth Assessment of Public Health and Associate Analyst Taylor Payne with Grand
Survey (YAS). Planning and implementation of this study were Valley State University. Data were collected from October
coordinated by the YAS Committee, whose time and efforts through mid-November 2017 and published May 2018.

Introduction

What is the YAS? How did the YAS get its start?
• A locally developed teen survey since 2005. • Prior to 2005, there wasn’t a consistent or reliable way to find
out about the needs and strengths of teens within the county.
• Conducted every two years at grades 8, 10 and 12
in participating Ottawa County schools. • Several organizations recognized this gap and worked together
to review existing surveys already considered valid and reliable.
• Monitors how behaviors increase, decrease or stay
the same over time. • From that review, a survey tool was developed specifically
for Ottawa County that could also be responsive to future

Average Age of Onset

Methodology
The responses of 12th-grade students were analyzed to estimate the average age when they first tried one of
the behaviors listed in the table below. For each of these behaviors, the responses were assigned a value and
the mean was calculated to give an estimate of the average age at which a student may try a behavior by
the time they reached their last year of high school.

“The YAS is perhaps the most comprehensive tool we have that helps our educational institutions, nonprofits and
other community-based organizations address some of the greatest challenges our schools and young people
face. As a community that cares deeply about its youth and wants to see them succeed, the YAS allows us to more
accurately target the real issues facing youth and not relying solely on a few perspectives or interpretations.”

Risk & Protective Factors

Community • Family • Peer & Individual

• Risk and protective factors are scored using sets of survey questions
called scales and are organized by domain (Community, Family
and Peer & Individual).

• The scale construction followed guidelines provided by the University Risk Factors are conditions that increase the
of Washington’s Social Development Research Group. The 2017 YAS likelihood of an adolescent becoming involved in
report contains scales for six risk factors (Community Disorganization; drug use, delinquency, school problems or violence.
Perceived Availability of Drugs; Family Conflict; Parental Attitudes
Favorable toward Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Use; Poor LOW PERCENTAGES are desirable among risk factors.
Family Management; and Low Perceived Risk of Drug Use) and one
protective factor (Family Opportunities for Pro-Social Involvement).

• Each question within a risk or protective scale had its responses

ordered and valued from one to four or from one to five, depending Protective Factors are conditions that buffer youth

then the student’s score for a scale was considered at risk. If the HIGH PERCENTAGES are desirable among protective factors.
student’s mean was less than or equal to the scale mean, then the
student’s score was considered not at risk.

• The Risk and Protective Factors tables report the percentage of

students who scored at risk for each Risk Factor scale or not at risk for
the single Protective Factor scale. Percentages were also reported
among the subgroups for gender, grade level and race/ethnicity.
