‘The Honorable Heather Wilson
Secretary of the Air Force
1670 Air Force Pentagon
‘Washington, DC 20330
Dear Secretary Wilson:
‘We write today to request information regarding privatized Air Force housing at Langley Air
Force Base in Virginia. As you know, Hunt Military Communities manages approximately 1,430
units at Joint Base Langley-Eustis in Virginia.
More than twenty years ago, Congress approved a privatization initiative that would utilize
private contractors to renovate and sustain an aging stock of government-owned military
housing. While some progress has occurred, a 2018 investigation by Reuters revealed significant
problems in military housing across the country, including lead poisoning, cockroaches, mice,
mold blooms and water leaks. These reports also described the difficulty that Airmen and th
families, among other servicemembers, have encountered in getting the private management
companies that own and operate the housing to address issues posing health hazards for fami
living in the homes.
Following these reports, we have met with military leadership, written letters, and held hearings
to express our deep concern, The health and safety of our servicemembers and their families are
of the utmost importance. Our nation’s military families deserve safe and healthy housing, and it
is imperative that the Air Force alleviate these issues.
As you work to develop a plan addressing this health crisis, we request the following
information:
1. Copies of the contracts — with the appropriate redaction of competition-sensitive
information — currently in place at Langley Air Force Base;
2. Copies of the service- or department-level guidance and policy documents that relate
directly to contracting for on-base privatized housing;
3. Copies of the standard operating procedures for responding to and rectifying lead paint
and other habitability, safety, and health complaints in government-owned housing; and
4. Any information on whether cure notices were sent to Hunt Military Communities for
failure to adhere to their contractual obligations.
‘Thank you for your attention to this serious matter. We look forward to your timely response.
Sincerely,
