COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) Reading class will follow the general education Common Core Curriculum with
modifications and accommodations as needed. This course covers reading and comprehending grade level appropriate
materials with emphasis on the following units or themes: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. Learning activities will
include creative projects, skits, and games to enhance student learning.
1 st Quarter: Elements of Fiction (RL.6.3, RL7.3, RL8.3) Cite Textual Evidence (R.L 6.1, RL 7.1, RL 8.1)
2 nd Quarter: Author’s Purpose (RI 6.6, RL7.6, RL8.6) and Author’s Point of View (RI 6.6, RI 7.6, RI 8.6)
3 rd Quarter: Figurative Language (RL 6.4, RL7.4, RL 8.4) Inferences (RL 6.1, RL 7.1, RL 8.1)
4 th Quarter: Literary Techniques (RL 6.3, RL 7.3, RL 8.3) Compare/Contrast Texts (RL 6.9, RL 7.9, RL 8.9)
STUDENT MATERIALS:
Please provide your child with the following school supplies as soon as possible:
1 or more pencils and eraser
1 package of loose leaf paper
1 black and/or blue pen
1 red pen
NOTE: Please ensure that your child has these supplies throughout the school year.

READING MATERIALS: Reading materials and textbooks will be provided by the teacher.
Information and assignments will be modified to meet your child’s unique needs. Modifications and accommodations
include:
extra time
more clues
visuals
multiple choice, true/false, work bank, open notes/book tests
simplified instructions and assignments/tasks
daily review and drill
The following Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) apply to all students. This year as a team we will focus on
BEHAVE APPRORIATELY and SUCCEED ACADEMICALLY. Specific lessons to address this SLO will be presented
during the Character Education Class.
CLASS RULES:
Use kind words and kind body language.
Be on time.
Keep your body and things to yourself.
Listen to and follow directions quickly.
Use English only, unless the teacher asks for help.

CITIZENSHIP RUBRIC:
GRADES:
Parents make check their child’s grade through PowerSchool. All assignments will be considered to have equal value and
will be graded on a percentage basis. All grades will be averaged together for a final grade, according to the following
scale:
A 100-90
B 89-80
C 79-70
D 69-60
F 59 AND BELOW

GRADE WEIGHTS:
Daily work = 30%
Tests = 25%
Quizzes = 20%
Projects = 15%
Homework = 10%
HOMEWORK POLICY:
Please ensure your child submits homework upon its due date.
Late homework will always have a 50% grade.
ABSENCES:
Any absence requires an excuse note from a parent/guardian to be given to the Home Room teacher. Please consider the
following guidelines:
Two or less consecutive absences need a parent note, to be presented to the Home Room teacher for an admit slip.
Three or more consecutive absences require a doctor’s note.
Off-island absences are obtained at the main office.
Death in the Family pre-arranged absences - Inquire at main office
*Failure to abide by the guidelines may result to a referral to Truancy Office

1. Update home address, phone numbers, and emergency contact information.
2. Sign and return progress reports.
3. Attend both Parent-Teacher conferences (October and March).
4. Ensure your child has a clean uniform and adequate sleep.
