HYDRAULIC POWER - MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. General
A. The maintenance practices included in this section (201-299
page block) are general maintenance instructions that do not
fall within a specific category. Any maintenance practices that
fall within a specific category will be provided in the
applicable page blocks.
B. Whenever hydraulic system components are disassembled, cleaned,
overhauled or installed, flushing with BMS 3-11 hydraulic fluid
only is recommended to avoid fluid contamination within the
operational system by incompatible materials.
WARNING : FIRE-RESISTANT HYDRAULIC FLUIDS CONFORMING TO BMS
3-11 MAY CAUSE SKIN IRRITATION. AVOID PROLONGED OR
REPEATED CONTACT WITH SKIN. IN CASE OF EYE CONTACT,
FLUSH EYES WITH WATER AND OBTAIN MEDICAL AID. IN
CASE OF INGESTION, OBTAIN MEDICAL AID.
(i) Repeat steps (g) and (h) for engine No. 2 pump
lines.
(j) Using one of the following steps, provide hydraulic
fluid source.
1) Disconnect the pressure hose from No. 2 system
B pump. Lengthen as necessary and route to the
outlet of the ground test bench. Route inlet of
ground test bench into the barrel of new oil.
2) A system B pump may be used as the hydraulic
pump by disconnecting one system B pump supply
hose at the reservoir disconnect and then by
lengthening this hose as required to reach into
the barrel of new oil. Although not required,
elevation of the barrel will improve suction
pressure and reduce the possibility of pump
cavitation.
(k) If test bench is used, flush both system B pump
pressure and case drain lines until approximately 2
gallons of fluid has been flushed from each line
into container.
(l) Provide electrical power to the P6 panel and check
that the following circuit breakers are closed:
1) All flight control circuit breakers
2) Hydraulic System B circuit breakers (only if
system B pump is used to provide fluid source)
3) Ground Interconnect Valve circuit breakers
4) Standby System circuit breakers
(m) On the pilots' overhead panel, check that all
systems A and B flight control switches are in the
OFF position.
(n) On the third crewman's panel, position the GROUND
INTERCONNECT switch to OPEN. Energize fluid source.
Perform the following operations in sequence to
assure complete changing of fluid.
(o) Retract and extend main and nose gear through two
full cycles (Ref Chapter 32 , Landing Gear).
(p) Shut off fluid source.
(q) Remove airplane from jacks (Ref Chapter 7 , Jacking
Airplane).
(r) Turn on fluid source.
(s) Operate nose wheel steering through two full cycles
(Ref Chapter 32 , Landing Gear).
(t) On the pilots' overhead panel, switch ON systems A
and B elevator power and operate the elevators
through seven full stroke cycles from DOWN to UP to
DOWN. Return control column to normal position and
switch OFF A and B elevator power.
(u) On the pilots' overhead panel, switch ON systems A
and B rudder power and operate the rudders through
two full stroke cycles from LEFT to RIGHT to LEFT.
Return rudder pedal to normal and switch OFF A and B
rudder power.
(v) Operate the ventral airstairs through two full
stroke cycles from DOWN to UP to DOWN. Return
airstairs to normal.
(w) On the pilots' overhead panel, switch ON trailing
edge flap power and operate the trailing edge flaps
twice from 0 to 10 to 0 degrees. This will also
operate the leading edge devices. Return flap
control lever to normal and switch OFF flap power.
(x) On the pilots' overhead panel, switch ON systems A
and B flight spoiler and aileron power and operate
the flight spoilers and ailerons by turning the
control wheel through five full stroke cycles from
LEFT to RIGHT to LEFT. Return control wheel to
(3) After all hydraulic fluid has been replaced, remove and
install new filters at the following location:
(a) System A hydraulic pump case drain filters (Ref
29-11-41 ).
(b) System A hydraulic pressure filter (Ref 29-11-62 ).
(c) System A hydraulic return filter (Ref 29-11-101 or
29-11-102).
(d) System B hydraulic pressure filter (Ref 29-12-32 ).
(e) System B hydraulic pump case drain filter (Ref
29-12-21 ).
(f) System B hydraulic return filter (Ref 29-12-51 ).
(g) Standby hydraulic system case drain filter (Ref
29-21-21 ).
(h) Standby hydraulic system pressure filter (Ref
29-21-32 ).
D. Return System to Normal
(1) Refill all reservoirs (Ref 12-12-0 , Hydraulic Fluid
Servicing).
(2) Pressurize hydraulic reservoirs (Ref 29-11-0, Maintenance
Practices ).
(3) Pressurize system B with ground interconnect valve open
(Ref 29-11-0, Maintenance Practices ).
(4) Check for leaks on all connections disconnected.
(5) Depressurize A and B systems.
(6) Position GROUND INTERCONNECT valve switch to CLOSE.
(7) Pressurize standby system and check for leaks on
connections disconnected.
(8) Return standby system to normal.
(9) Determine if there is any further need for electrical
power on airplane. If not, remove electrical power.
