Abstract
This paper discusses the uses of Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) technology in higher education in the
Assosa University. It includes Wi-Fi standards, security, the adoption of the technology,
challenges for implementation, Benefits for teachers and learners. This paper’s main aim is the
case study of status and importance of Wi-Fi technology for different disciplines’ research works
at Assosa University. Although Wi-Fi technology has a great promise to research scholars in
higher education; educational institutions and universities are still at the beginning stage of
adoption. There is a vital need to make strategies to develop Wi-Fi technology support to
improve the research, teaching and learning.
1 Introduction
Wi-Fi is the wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide high-speed internet
and network connection. Wi-Fi network has no physical wired connection between sender and
receiver. Wi-Fi is used for different purposes such as data transmission, wireless communication.
Wi-Fi connection ensures faster, more reliable internet access and it is cheaper. This network
allows any connection without using cards; we can take our laptops wherever we want with the
option of having a wireless connection with the help of routers and adapters.
Research objectives
1. Find out the student community awareness on availability of Wi-Fi connectivity.
AWARENESS AND USE OF WI-FI INFRASTRUCTURE IN STUDENT’S COMMUNITY
3 Research questions
How to crack Wi-Fi network, if you are using WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) Password
with backtrack?
Differentiate between Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure topology and also explain with their
advantages and disadvantages?
How do you secure a wireless network?
What are your preferred tools for War Driving?
How can you configure Wi-Fi network and what are Wi-Fi Protocols?
How is UWB (ultra-wideband) different from Bluetooth, FireWire and Wi-Fi?
Who are the providers and what are the assets available for wireless?
Wireless networking, or Wi-Fi, can be used to connect computers in a home, and many
cities are using technologies to offer free or low cost internet access to residents, what is
another name for Wi-Fi?
Can I mix wireless equipments from different vendors, elaborate on it?
If my computer is connected to wireless LAN, can it communicate with computer on
wired LAN as well?
Is it true that Wireless networking is only good for laptop computer?
AWARENESS AND USE OF WI-FI INFRASTRUCTURE IN STUDENT’S COMMUNITY
4 Hypotheses/Theses
1. Reliability has no significant relationship with student loyalty
2. Responsiveness has no significant relationship with student loyalty
3. Student satisfaction does not significantly mediate the relationship between the respective
independent and the dependent variable
4. E. learning is direct relation to the wireless network
5. Distribution of Wi-Fi is hilly advent to student.
5 Literature review
The overarching research question guiding the literature review is: how does the literature on Wi-
Fi use suggest as the appropriate frameworks and concept for describing and analyzing academic
perusal. Today, teachers expect students to deliver papers written on computers, expecting them
to be able to use spell-check, count words, etc. Students are expected to use the digital resources
of university libraries, read e-mails, get information about schedules and upload their
assignments online. And there has been an increase in the usage of consortia within the campus
as the usage increases the cost benefit of electronic resources in the given institution will prove
to be effective.
Although the study threw a few lights to the Wi-Fi facility in Assosa University there is always a
room for improvement. An approach to Users awareness study is in itself a diverse area and
therefore the study is limited to a given sample users. With limited time frame, coverage on the
users view and cost benefit analysis was not incorporated. User’s perception on familiarities and
the technical aspect of the facility were avoided and was confine to awareness and the student
usage of campus Wi-Fi. The demographic characteristics of year of study and college enrollment
for the sample were similar to those of both university student enrolment to the hostel and the
university student population. However, the small sample sizes were subject to variance equality
problems when analyzing results based upon groups. Male participants significantly
outnumbered female participants. While general conclusions could be drawn regarding results as
applied to the residential student body, the sample does not reflect the attitudes of non residential
students, which may be different, compared to those of residential students despite similar
demographic variables. Documenting the disparity between commuter and residential students is
an area for future research.
The data was collected based on the questionnaire. The aim of the questionnaire was to examine
the extent of Wi-Fi technology usage among the target group of all disciplines of research
scholars of Assosa University. 13 printed questionnaires were administered to all the users of the

3 departments of the selected disciplines within the campus. The survey comprised of closed-
ended questions organized in three sections.

Conclusion
The Wi-Fi facility enabled research scholars can access Wi-Fi in classrooms, research laboratory,
library, hostel rooms and campus, 24 X 7 free of cost. Moreover, the Wi-Fi enabled campus
would help in providing free and affordable high quality e-content to all the students and
research scholars of the Assosa University. The University should encourage these ideas for the
improvement of quality based research in the country

Bibliography
The most important part of the literature in this study is to look at studies that have been
conducted before on the Wi-Fi usage of Wi-Fi in assosa universities and purpose of Wi-Fi in
institutions (education) to understand the topic better. The literature also seeks to understand how
student’s benefits from it, disadvantages and the changes it brought to universities in general.
Student’s benefits from it, it disadvantages and the changes it brought to universities in general.
Usage of Wi-Fi in a universities as earlier noted that education institutions in assosa have
adopted Wi-Fi technology. This project was aimed to provide wireless communication all over
the building to both the students and staff members. The university managed to install one access
points around the campuses. As a result of the installations, there was no need for the institutions
to build lots of computer labs that can cost millions of birr just to provide Internet services to
students and lecturers that the use of handhold devices can become a distraction to students
during lectures, where by students use these devices to access Internet and do other
academic unrelated activities. Although, in the University of assosa, students started using Wi-
