TIPS & TECHNIQUES

Surface Preparation: Unless otherwise stated I seal all my surfaces with 1 coat of DecoArt Multi-Purpose Sealer.
Let dry. Sand lightly.

Stenciling/Drybrushing: I drybrush my stenciling using a good quality stencil brush. The brush must be dry.
When Drybrushing, I load my paint from a dry surface, not a wet palette as the moisture will get into the
brush and make the paint go on smudgy. I also keep an old towel handy; it is great for cleaning the brush
between colors.

To start, load the brush by tipping it into the paint, blend out on palette paper then wipe any excess paint off on
a paper towel. Lightly scrub over the stencil or onto the surface to apply the color. Start softly then press harder
depending how much color you need. The harder you press; the more color you will get. Unless otherwise stated,
my stenciling is always imperfect for a bit of a distressed look.

Float / Shade: I always float my color with the Angular Shaders. Mop to soften with a Mop Brush. I shade around
my design elements before base coating; I like the softer look I get when I do this. Unless otherwise indicated,

I shade around the entire shape and deepen in corners
and under design elements for more depth.
Line: Unless otherwise stated, all lining is done with the
10/ 0 Script Liner and the paint watered down to an
ink-like consistency.
Basecoat: Use the brush that best fits the size of the
area to be painted.
Wash: Add small amounts of water to a small drop of
your paint for an inky transparent consistency. Once
brush is loaded, tap onto a paper towel to remove
excess water.
PREPARATION:
Note: Refer to the color photo for shading and detail
placement.
• Seal all the wood with DecoArt Multi-Purpose
Sealer. Sand lightly.
PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS:
* Note on the Industrial stamp set. There are 3 stamps,
one looks like Crackle, one looks like wrinkles and the
last looks like blotchy texture. I will refer to them as
such in the instructions.
Blue Block:
• Base the entire block with Spa Blue.
• Stamp with the Industrial “wrinkles” stamp and
Aqua Sky.
• Shade the block with Aqua Sky.
• Stamp with the Industrial “blotchy texture” stamp
and Light Lime.
• Stencil random patches of Warm White using the
Small Bubble Wrap stencil.
• Trace on pattern.
• Deepen shading with Peacock Teal.
Garland –
• Stipple the garland using the 1/8” Deerfoot with
Festive Green.
• Repeat with Green Tree, then Light Lime.
• Stipple with a little Warm White.
Snowmen –
• Base the body and the face with Light Buttermilk.
• Shade with Spa Blue.
• Drybrush with Warm White.
• Deepen shading with Aqua Sky.
• Drybrush the cheeks with Cotton Candy.
• Dot the eyes with Lamp Black. Dot the pupils with
Warm White.
• Line the nose with Canyon Orange tipped in
Cinnamon Drop.
• Line the twig arms with Espresso tipped in Lamp
Black.
• Base the wings with Warm White.
Pink Skirt –
• Base with a wash of Cotton Candy, Shade with
Watermelon Slice.
• Float along the bottom with Pink Chiffon.
• Dot and float brighter highlights with Warm White.
• Line the waist band and bow using the #2 Liner
loaded with Watermelon Slice tipped in Pink
Chiffon. Base the checks with Warm White.
• Dot the scallops with Cotton Candy.
• Dot the skirt with Warm White.
• Dot the snowman Buttons with Watermelon Slice.
Dot the button holes with Warm White.

Purple Skirt –
• Base with a wash of Lilac, Shade with Grape Juice.
• Float along the bottom with Soft Heather.
• Dot and float brighter highlights with Warm White.
• Line the waist band and bow using the #2 Liner
loaded with Grape Juice tipped in Soft Heather.
Base the checks with Warm White.
• Dot the scallops with Lilac.
• Dot the skirt with Warm White.
• Dot the snowman buttons with Grape Juice. Dot
the button holes with Warm White.
Pink Block:
• Base the entire block with Cotton Candy.
• Stamp with the Industrial “wrinkles” stamp and
Watermelon Slice.
• Shade the block with Watermelon Slice.
• Stamp with the Industrial “blotchy texture” stamp
and Pink Chiffon. Then again with a little Spa Blue.
• Stencil random patches of Warm White using the
Small Bubble Wrap stencil.
• Deepen Shading with Cinnamon Drop.
• Stencil the word SNOWFLAKE with Cinnamon
Drop using the Laurie Speltz Alpha 103 stencil.

Green Block:
• Base the entire block with Light Lime.
• Stamp with the Industrial “wrinkles” stamp and
Green Tree.
• Shade the block with Green Tree.
• Stamp with the Industrial “blotchy texture” stamp
and Spa Blue.
• Stencil random patches of Warm White using the
Small Bubble Wrap stencil.
• Deepen shading with Festive Green.
• Stencil the word KISSES with Festive Green using
the Laurie Speltz Alpha 103 stencil.
• Base the heart with Cotton Candy. Shade
with Watermelon Slice. Drybrush and float a
highlight with Pink Chiffon. Deepen shading with
Cinnamon Drop.
• Line the word ARE with Lamp Black.
• Base the tag with Spa Blue. Shade with Aqua Sky,
Drybrush and float highlights with Blue Chiffon.
Deepen shading with Peacock Teal.
• Line the word FROM and the string with
Lamp Black.
Purple Block:
• Base the entire block with Lilac.
• Stamp with the Industrial “wrinkles” stamp and
Grape Juice.
• Shade the block with Grape Juice.
• Stamp with the Industrial “blotchy texture” stamp
and Soft Heather. Then again with a little Spa Blue.
• Stencil random patches of Warm White using the
Small Bubble Wrap stencil.
• Deepen shading with Dioxazine Purple.
• Stencil the word HEAVEN with Grape Juice using
the Laurie Speltz Alpha 103 stencil.
• Base the little snowman heads same as
Snowmen above.

All blocks –
• Stencil over all the letters with Titanium White,
moving the stencil slightly to the left.
(I did this twice so the letters were nice and white)

FINISHING:
• Outline as desired with Lamp Black.
• Line all the Snowflakes and the Garland with
Titanium White.
• For lining all the white I used the DecoArt Ultra
Fine Liner tip on my Titanium White.
• Dot all Snowflakes with Titanium White.
• Line the Halo’s with Rose Gold Metallic (I used the
liner tip)
• Base the wings with a wash of Rose Gold Metallic.
• Dot the hearts with Titanium White and some with
Watermelon Slice.
