In this article, students from a high school in Glendale began a student support group to

properly train upperclassmen to recognize the signs of depression and other mental

illnesses. The author uses accounts from the students who participated themselves to

share their stories and how they felt participating in the program to make a difference.

This article was brief itself, giving the retelling of an assembly to inform students of the

very real issue of suicide. A student from a separate high school gave her speech on her

training group and how to start the training with her program, inspiring Glendale high

students to participate to help their fellow peers. This is relevant because of how similar

it is to our project, even if we have bigger aspirations for the whole thing, we want

something along the lines of this training group for students to pass on to

underclassmen and keep the group going.

This article addresses the growing needs for mental health in public schools as it

becomes more apparent that more and more students are affected by mental illness. The

author uses studies from psychologists based on how many younger students need

emotional help in schools and how many of those students later on drop out of high

school because of the improper addressing of what problems they were going through.

This article goes more in depth in the need for proper training to identify mental illness

and how to assist students without making them feel even worse. Providing statistics of

how many drop outs there are based on mental illness and how many teens end up in

the juvenile justice system due to being unable to properly deal with their problems. The

author reinstating that more than just students need to be able to help each other, faculty

also need training. This is relevant due to the scale we want to extend our ideas,

inspiring more than just students to participate in what we are doing for the suffering

students at Poly.
