Course Title: (ME-206) Heat and Mass Transfer Date: January 18, 2019
Maximum Marks: 45 Maximum Time: 1 hr

 Formula sheet is given at the end of the paper.

Q1. Consider the composite wall shown in fig. The concrete and brick section are of equal
thickness. Temperatures at the inside and outside of the wall are 370 ⁰C and 66 ⁰C and the
Convective heat transfer coefficients is 10 W/m2 ⁰C respectively.

a) Draw the thermal circuit for heat flow across the wall. (with convective resistances)
[10]
b) Calculate rate of heat transfer through the wall. [10]
c) Calculate outside and interface temperatures of the wall. [5]
d) The Percentage of Q́ that flows through the brick. [5]

Q2. An electric wire of 2mm diameter is given a 25mm thick insulation (k = 0.25 W/ m. °C).
The Surroundings has temperature of 25 °C and heat transfer coefficient h = 10 W/ m 2.
°C. The wire has surface temperature of 120 °C.

a) Compare the heat dissipation with and without insulation. [12]

b) Find the thickness of the insulation when heat dissipation is maximum and find its value.
