The earliest known example of soil improvement with lime is the Via Appia in
Rome

Introducing lime into the soil, for example, adjusts the optimal water content,
which greatly improves the soil’s compactability.
Adding cement stabilizes the soil and improves its bearing capacity.
Soils treated in this way are eminently suitable for the construction of all
types of roads, airports, pipelines, foundations of houses, and more

Procedure:
Generally, soil treatment involves several phases.
These various phases may be performed in different sequences,

depending on whether the soil is to be treated on the site or whether
transport of the soil before or after the treatment is planned.
1. Preparation of the soil and Crushing Stones and Rock

2. Spreading the binder
3. Mixing
4. Grading and Compaction
5. Curing

1. Preparation of the soil and Crushing stones and rock:
- Grading operation to compensate large unevenness.
- If the stones are very big it could be convenient to crush them

before spreading and mixing.
- This operation is not always necessary as in different cases using a

multi-function FAE machine one single pass (mixing and
crushing) is also possible, in this case spreading the binding agent
is the first job to do.

2. Spreading the binder:
In most cases, the lime is spreaded using a spreader fitted with a

weighting device (ideally this should be matched to the speed of the
vehicle). This operation should be carried out with a maximum of
precision and regularity. The binder is supplied pneumatically to the
spreader from the silo vehicle/ truck.
If no spreader is available it is also possible to spread cement/lime by
hand. (very common in poor countries and countries in development)

3. Mixing:
The purpose of this operation is mixing the binder into the soil in the
most homogeneous way possible.
Depending on the nature of the soil and the size of the construction
site.
This work will be done with FAE soil stabilizers or multi function units,
for example the FAE STABI/H or MTH.

4. Grading and Compaction:
After grading, the treated soil has to be

compacted using a compacting machine
In warm weather and when the soil is wet, it is advisable to carry out
the compaction a few hours after mixing, to give the lime enough time
to bind with the water and evaporate.
Should there be a risk of rain, compaction of the soil should be done
before any water can again penetrate the treated layers.

5. Curing:
Should large quantities of lime/cement be added in order to achieve

higher bearing capacities or strength, then the humidity of the soil must
be kept under control.
When higher dosage levels of binder are used, additional moistening of
the soil may be necessary.

Economic Advantages:
-Limitation of the need for embankment materials

brought in from outside and the elimination of their
transporting costs.
- Reduction of transport movements in the immediate vicinity of the

construction site.
- Machines can move about with far greater ease. Delays due to weather
conditions are reduced, leading to improved productivity.
- As a result, the overall construction duration and costs can be

dramatically reduced.
- Structures have a longer service life.

= CRUSHING THE OLD ROAD AND IF REQUESTED STABILIZE IT
The process takes place on-site: Special machines pulverise the existing road in-situ
and then through the addition of cement provide a deep structural repair with a
long design life. After grading, the new base is compacted to produce a strong,
durable base for either an asphalt or concrete surface.

Water Spray System and NEW AIS

General
Used in Soil stabilization works to inject water in the mixing chamber to activate the
setting of the binder with the soil and to increase the natural moisture content if
necessary.
The water injection system can be used if needed to cool down the tools and is
recommended for milling the asphalt, concrete and very hard rock.
The cooling and lubricating effect prevent the overheating of the tools and the carbide
element of the tools.
The wear of the tools is reduced considerably.
The system can also be used for some liquid stabilizers like polymers.

Optional Water Spray System Full control - AIS
 Using AIS, the operator can directly set the exact quantity of liquid on the display
(l/m² - gall/sq. foot) or the volume (l/m³ - gall/cubic foot).
 The AIS intelligent system adjusts itself, automatically defining the flow in the
mixing chamber according to the speed and the working depth.
 In comparison to the manual flow regulation, AIS leaves no margin for errors.
 Various sensors on the machine guarantee the correct automatic functioning of this
injection system.
 The ISOBUS connection or the optional radar sensor on the machine

continuously monitors the advancement speed, while various other sensors
control the working depth.
 The nozzles in pairs can be electronically controlled and opend or closed
