Teenager
dies after
roll-over
By Meg Kennedy

Rather than celebrating the Australia Day long weekend, two families are in
mourning after another fatal accident on the Western Freeway near Gordon
claimed the life of a young female passenger, and seriously injured the female
driver.
The incident occurred just before 11.30am on Thursday, 24 January, where it is
alleged a 4WD Holden Jackaroo, travelling westbound, struck the right-hand lane
wire-rope safety barrier, causing it to roll and flip numerous times before coming The accident on the Western Freeway last Thursday claimed the life of the 19-year old passenger with

The passenger, a 19-year-old woman from Yarraville died at the scene; whilst
the driver, an 18-year-old Aspendale woman, remains in the Royal Melbourne
Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
It is believed the red P-plate driver over-corrected whilst steering and lost control
of the vehicle.
Victoria Police confirmed to the Moorabool News that no charges will be laid as
a result.
Local police and emergency services, including an air ambulance, responded
promptly in the sweltering 38 degrees temperature; creating extensive traffic
delays of around 5km and diversions for Ballarat-bound traffic through Gordon
via the Ballan-Daylesford Rd exit.
The accident occurred almost a week to the day where a motorcyclist died on
18 January, after allegedly hitting a steel safety barrier at the Racecourse road
overpass, on the same stretch of road.
Victoria Police Senior Sergeant Ben Young told awaiting media on the scene that
“investigations are continuing in regard to both of those incidents.”
“It’s a tragic start to the year, both state-wide, but particularly locally,” he said.
The accident occurred just before the start of Police Victoria’s Operation Amity,
which operated from Friday, 25 January until Monday 28 January 2019.
Police members targeted speed, fatigue, impaired driving, distraction and
seatbelt compliance.

Lighting a start for

Park hub
By Meg Kennedy

Darley Football Netball Club has received a government-

funded boost, possibly lighting the way for its dream multi-
million-dollar facility.
The $150,000 grant, which will go toward the installation of
new 150-lux lights, makes up part of Sports Australia’s first
round of Community Sport Infrastructure Grants.
AFL Goldfields said in a statement that the new lights “will
provide Darley Park user groups and their teams much
needed match level lighting to support the growth from both
genders of their fast-growing clubs.”
Darley FNC Club Administrator Ray Newton said the club
is delighted with the news of the grant.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

A small group of BMLAC athletes travelled to Werribee to participate in the Inter Centre Round last
Saturday. This was a chance for the athletes to compete against other athletes from Corio, Brimbank,
Melton City and Werribee. For a number of junior athletes, this was their first opportunity to compete
on a synthetic track. Athletes came away from the meet with many personal best results.
This Saturday the Centre will return to the normal Saturday morning competition at Masons Lane
Reserve.
The State Combined Event will also be held this weekend at Lakeside Stadium with the following
athletes representing Bacchus Marsh - Felix Cukavac, Jonas Cukavac, Oliver Cukavac, Solomon Miesen
and Emma Stewart.

win in one of the coming three two-day fixtures could well
determine if they make the finals or not.
On a positive note, the Lions middle order put to bed any
external pressure concerning their fragility. In fact, it was
the middle order who would see out the run chase after the
Lions looked in some bother at 4/108, needing a further 80
runs to win with two new batsmen at the crease.
Number five batsman and youngster Joel Cadman led by
example beyond his years proving that poise and patience in
the two-day format is priceless.
The 18-year old’s 130-minute innings of 62 was the steadying
influence at one end that allowed the free hitting Hispatha
Wickramasinghe 32 (44) and Andy Metcalfe 75 (79) to do
their thing at the other.
Opener Danza Hyatt 51 (73) started the run chase in typical
style, it was the West Indians fourth 50 from six outings with
the club this season. Despite Hyatt’s consistent form at the
top of the order he would be disappointed getting out with
the score at 2/78, still 109 shy of the target.
While the win was comfortable in the end, Lions coach Mike
Alexander believes that these standards must be the bare
minimum if the Lions are to make finals.
“We did it pretty easy for most of the day,” he said.
“Ideally, we would like to have achieved the run chase with
only two or three (wickets) down.
“We bat pretty deep, the signs look good for the group Captain Michael Snaith and Jack McGregor appeal successfully for an LBW. Michael picked up 5/19 and scored 70 in the
ahead of our next three two-day games.” first innings.
Alexander recognised the contribution of English newcomer
Andy Metcalfe who has had an immediate impact.
“Andy came out (to Australia) as a travel buddie of Rick
Moore after Christmas and was keen to play some cricket,”
he said.
“His attitude and positivity has been great since his arrival.”
The Lions have recorded all five of their seasons’ wins
chasing runs (from eight attempts) while remaining winless
from four outings batting first. It will be interesting to see
what Alexander does if he wins the toss ahead of Saturday’s
mini Elimination Final against the eighth placed Brown Hill.
Day One action begins at Darley Park from 1pm.
