Thesis topic:“About thermal anomalies in deep water thrustbelts"
Abstract
Thrust belts evolve due to the effect of compressive stress or gravitational sliding of sediments.
These structures are identified in foreland basins and back arc basins and also in the platform of
passive margin environments. In adittion, they can generate high heat flow values that can be
considerated as Oil/Gas and geothermics exploratory opportunities. The main objectives in this
thesis are to perform numerical simulations of two layers folding by compression that include:
heat transport by conduction and convection, heat generation by radioactive decay and friction in
faults in order to understand the origin of the heat flow anomalies that have been observed in
many deep water thrust belts. The process of deformation and folding is governed by the mass
conservation and Navier - Stokes equations. To simulate heat transfer by conduction we used
Fourier’s law which depends on the thermal conductivity and thermal gradient. The Athy equation
calculates the change of porosity due to effects of effective pressure, then, with a Kozeny-Carman
relationship and Udden-Wentworth scale we obtained the permeability. The Darcy’s Law describes
the flow behavior through a porous medium. This is proportional to the permeability of the rock
and pore pressure, and inversely proportional to the fluid viscosity and can eventually transport
heat by convection to the surface. This mechanism explains the generation of mud volcanoes
in many thrust belts. The results show that heat transfer by conduction dominates at the fold’s
core; this is due to the high thermal conductivity and low porosity of this area. Heat transfer
by convection dominates at the fold as long as inverse faults and zones of high permeability
are generated. The results presented here show that convection will dominate with velocities
> 1x10−9 m/s (3 cm/year) and with fewer values, conduction will be the dominant process.
