He could hardly sleep in the night. Early in the morning he picked up a
basket; put some meat, flour and dates in it; went straight to her house
and knocked at the door.
“Who are you?”
“I am the man who brought your water yesterday. Now I have brought
some food for the children.”
“May God bless you and judge between us and Ali”
She opened the door. Entering the house he said: “I wish to do some
good acts. Either let me knead the flour and bake the bread or allow me
to look after the children.”
“Very well, but I can do the job of kneading and cooking better than
you. You take care of the children till I finish cooking”.
She went to knead the flour. Immediately he grilled some meat, which
he had brought and fed the children saying to each child while putting
morsel in his mouth: “My son, forgive Ali if he has failed in his duty
towards you” The flour got ready; she called: “Gentleman! Put fire in
the oven”. He went and put fire in the oven. When flames rose up, he
brought his face near the fire and said, “Taste the heat of fire. It is the
punishment for those who fail in their duty towards orphans and wid-
ows.”
By chance, a woman from the neighboring house came in. Recogniz-
ing the stranger, she cried: “Woe, don’t you recognize the man who is
helping you? He is Ameer-ul-Momineen (commander of the faithful),
Imam Ali ibn Abu Talib (A.S.).”
The widow came forward and shamefacedly cried: “Curse and shame
to me. I beg your pardon.”
“No, I beg your pardon for I failed in my duty towards you.”
Facts
•The First Surah to come down to Prophet Mu-
hammed (P) is Suratul Al-‘Alaq (The Clot) in the Holy city of Makkah.
•The Last two Surahs that come down to Prophet Muhammed (P) to
conclude the Qur’an are Suratul Falaq (The Dawn) and Suratul Nass
(Mankind) in the Holy city of Medina.
•All Suar (Chapters) were brought down from Allah through an angel
called Gabriel delivered directly to Prophet Mohammed (P).
•Most of the Surah came down to Prophet Muhammed (P) in Cave
Harrah’.
•Did you know that the Prophet Muhammed (P) said: “Whoever recites
the first four verses of Suratul Baqarah, Ayatul Kursi along with the two
verses that follow it, and the last three verses of the same Surah will
not see any bad or sorrow in his life or his wealth: Satan will not come
near him, and he will not forget the Qur’an”.

Before even revealing the religion of Islam to Prophet Muhammad [s],
Allah [swt] stresses the importance of reading and understanding the
Quran. The religion of Islam was originally revealed to mankind through
the first man on earth, Prophet Adam [s]. Since then, there have been
numerous prophets and messengers who have instructed their people
and taught them the message of Islam. Unfortunately, many of these
people eventually deviated from the religion. In order to prevent this
from occurring again, Allah [swt] starts His revelation to Prophet Muham-
mad [s] by emphasizing the importance of holding tight to the rope of
Allah [swt]. At this day and age, the Quran is one of our strongest links
to Allah [swt].
The Quran contains treasures that have yet to be discovered by many.
Prophet Muhammad [s] advised us to read the Quran frequently. He
says,
“…When afflictions surround you like the dark night, refer to the
Quran, because it is an Intercessor whose intercession is accepted. It
reports evils (of people) that will be confirmed. It leads the person to
Heaven who puts it in front of himself (follows it); and he who puts it
behind himself (neglects it) will be driven to Hell. This very Quran is the
best guide to the best ways. It is a Book in which there are useful expla-
nations, statements, and gaining (of goals). It is the Separator (of right
and wrong)…”
– Usul-I-kafi, vol. 2, p. 599 –
There will come a day when all of mankind will have to answer to
God. Every human will be held accountable for all that he did and did not
do. This day is the Day of Judgment, the Day of Accountability. On this
day, Allah [swt] will ask us whether or not we used these gems that He
has given us. On this day the Quran will complain to Allah [swt] claiming
that the Muslims did not utilize it to their advantage. It will complain that
it was not read on a regular basis and that in some households it was
merely considered a decoration.
It is up to us to make use of all that the Quran has to offer. The Quran
should be read regularly and not exclusively in times of hardship. It is our
guiding light. Without it, one is like a lost child in the dark night. Those
who stick with it will be guided. Like a traveler with a compass, one who
knows what he believes will never loose his way.
