KinderMath Unit 6 Lesson 4: Groups of 10

Teacher: Miss Amanda Holder

Grade: Full-Day Kindergarten
Content Area: Mathematics

Content and Standards:

Standard – CC.2.1.K.A.2: Apply one-to-one correspondence to count the number of

objects.

Prerequisites:

Students should recognize and write numbers 0-20.

Students should proficiently count 0-20.

Essential Questions:

How can I recognize and count groups of ten and some more?

Materials and Equipment:

• KinderMath 6.4 SmartBoard Presentation

• 8 Baggies with Various Numbers of Objects (11-20)
• 8 Strings
• 8 Sets of Number Cards (11-20)
• Bag of Beans and String for Teacher
• 17 Group of Ten Worksheets

Instructional Objective:

Students will know how to recognize and count groups of ten and be able to apply that
knowledge to counting 11-20 objects.

Instructional Procedures:

Warm-Up:
• Students will form a circle on the carpet. Students will count around the circle to 50.
• Students will count with body exercises to 20 (ex. 20 toe touches, 20 jumping jacks).
• Students will watch “Say Ten” push-ups video and count.
• Students will answer word problem “I have 10 trucks and 4 dinosaurs. How many
toys do I have in all?” on SmartBoard.
Mini-Lesson:
• Students will sit in a circle on the carpet.
• Students will learn how to count using groups of 10 and then count the extras for teen
number counting.
• Ask the students, “We have talked about the importance of finding our groups of tens
and then seeing how many more extras we have. After we count the group of ten, and
set that group aside, is it easier to see how many extras we have to count?”
• Model the partner activity with the students. Pour out a baggie filled with beans and
count the beans with the students. Once ten beans are counted, push them aside and
put a string around them. Ask the students, “Do we need to count these beans again,
now that we know there are 10 in the circle?”
• Students will see the emphasis on the group of ten beans and the extra beans. (ex. 10
and 3 is 13) when counting.
• Model two more objects and their counting with the students.
During:
• Students will be placed with their PB&J Partners.
• Each partner group will get a baggie with various objects (ex. 11-20 erasers, 11-20
paper clips) and 4 strings.
• Students will be asked to count each group of objects using the “group of ten” way of
counting that was modeled during the mini-lesson. Students will put a string around
the group of 10 and count the extras. Students will place a number card next to the
group of objects with the number of objects written on it.
After:
• Students will be given a worksheet to practice the “group of ten” concept
independently.

Assessment:

• Through informal observation, students will show if they have met the
instructional objective during the partner work, if they are able to utilize the
“group of ten” concept in counting and accurately record the number of objects
using that concept.
• Independently, the students will be assessed on their worksheet. If they are able to
circle the group of ten and count the extras and record the number, the students
will have mastered the instructional objective.

Differentiated Instruction:
• For students who may need to be challenged, and additional challenge assignment
will be uploaded to SeeSaw for the students to complete when they are finished with
the worksheet.
• For students who may struggle with the concept, a small teacher-aided group will be
formed to help the students through the concept.
• One-on-one teacher support will also be provided for students who may need it.
