LETTERING
Technical Lettering
Technical Lettering is the process of forming letters, numerals
and other characteristic in technical drawings.

It is use to provide detail specifications for the object with


the goals of eligibility and uniformity.

Styles are standardized and letterings ability has relationship


to normal writing ability.

Architectural Letterings are derived from upper Gothic Letters

LETTERING
Methods of Lettering

1. FREEHAND LETTERING
Writing of letters without the help of lettering tools.

2. MECHANICAL LETTERING
Writing of letters with the use of lettering guides and templates.

3. COMPUTER AIDED-DESIGN SOFTWARE


Lettering use in CAD application.

LETTERING
Types of Writing

1. PICTURE TYPE

2. PHONETIC TYPE
It is called Alphabet in English. Originate from Syria and
Palestine around 1750 – 1500 B.C.

Basic Lettering Styles
1. GOTHIC
All letters of the Alphabet made with even strokes. Originate
from Northern France in Late 11th Century.
2. ROMAN
All letters made with accented strokes or thick and thin strokes.
Roman letters or manuscript are basically just variations of Gothic
Letters using thick and thin strokes.
3. TEXT
Known as “Old English”. Text or Old English letters are originally
called Gothic. It is a variation of Roman Type.
4. SCRIPT
Is a manuscript which is a variation of Roman usually italic or
slanted, very graceful and decorative.

Parts of Letters
1. STEM
Ascender – are letter stems moving upward
Descender - are letter stems moving downward
2. SERIFS
3. BAR OR CROSS BAR

Rule of Thumb in Writing:


One unit letter and ¼ unit for space.

UPPERCASE – refers to capital letters


LOWERCASE – refers to small letters
