Worries growing about
impact of a prolonged
government shutdown
By Martin Crutsinger
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON — With President Donald Trump warning

that it “could be a long time” before the partial shutdown of
the government ends, concerns are rising about potential
economic damage given that the shutdown is coinciding
with other threats.
Most analysts don’t regard the shutdown alone as severe
enough to imperil an economic expansion that has lasted
nearly a decade. But should it drag into February, the slow-
down in government activity could help shake confidence
and cause businesses and consumers to stop spending.
“The shutdown is coming on top of lots of other prob-
lems — the trade war, the slump in the stock market, Brexit,
Trump’s political problems,” said Mark Zandi, chief econo-
mist at Moody’s Analytics. “By itself, the shutdown may
not be a big deal, but if you add it up and mix it with all this
other noxious stuff, it could become a real problem.”
Though he still foresees only a minimal impact from the
shutdown, Zandi said that “if the trade war isn’t settled
soon, that will be a real problem, and if it conflates with a
prolonged shutdown, that could be fodder for a recession.”
REUTERS The shutdown has already suspended the government’s

King is queen of court By Terry Bernal

DAILY JOURNAL STAFF

Just look at her now.

When Grace King was promoted to the Menlo School var-
sity volleyball team in 2016 at the start of her sophomore
season, it wasn’t a popular choice. She was one of four soph-
omores that would help the Lady Knights to a Division IV
state championship, sure. But the then-varsity rookie admit-
tedly had plenty of room to grow.
“I spent every day feeling like I was the runt of the team,”
King said. “So just having that mindset pushed me to get better.”
Come her senior year, King grew into a formidable force.
The 5-10 outside hitter ranked seventh in the Central
Coast Section with 369 total kills, and led the West Bay
Athletic League Foothill Division with 3.7 kills per set. She
proved a well-rounded six-rotation player, ranking third on
her team with 2.8 digs per set, third in total blocks with 32,
and first from the service line with a team-best 60 aces.
In leading Menlo to play among the elite postseason
brackets — the Knights qualified for both the Central Coast
Section Open Division tournament and the CIF Division I
State Volleyball Championships tournament — King
emerged as the most elite player in her league, earning the
title of WBAL Foothill Division Most Valuable Player.
Now, King has been named the Daily Journal’s Volleyball
Player of the Year.
