1. Introduction
Badan Pusat Statistik (BPS) in 2011
gained data that the number of blind people in
Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta reach 15, 9% from
the total 11.389 either total blind or low vision.
Nowadays, one of the obstacles for them is
reading normally using conventional book. They
usually read using braille book or digital book.
But, the availability of the various kinds of braille
books are still limited and the contents of the book
are incomplete. Blind people tried to solve their Fig.1, design front of the SCA-BLE
problem by asking to other people to read the
book for them. This condition of course
inefficient in terms of time, effort and money.
This research is aimed to measure the degree of
the SCA-BLE (Scanner for Blind People) tool’s
effectiveness and explain how it help blind people
read the conventional book.

2. Experiment Design
In this research, the method from SCA-
BLE is divided in four ways. First, constructing
of the framework SCA-BLE, second is
programming with python in Raspberry Pi, third
is setting up all the materials, and testing includes
font and noise test from image input. The
constructing of framework made from plywood
with the size of height x width x length (30 cm x Fig.3, design inside of SCA-BLE
24 cm x 35 cm). It used Raspberry Pi, Pi Camera,
image filtering document (black and white) 3. Results and Analysis
module, Tesseract OCR, Google Text to Speech,
LED lamps, and one push button. This Raspberry
Pi used as a microcontroller. Pi Camera is used to
take photos of text as data input. Image filtering
document black and white is used to sharpen
image input. Tesseract OCR is as the platform for
synthesis the photo to text, while Google Text to
Speech changes the text into speech besides, LED
lamps for lighting when scanning process
occurred and push button to operate SCA-BLE.
Based on examining, Fig.1, Fig.2, and Fig.3, are
design of SCA-BLE.

Fig.4, Flowchart of SCA-BLE tool

SCA-BLE works as Fig.4, showed. It will start OCR and gTTS. The tool has relative low
when push button is pushed. Based on examining, mistakes when the font used is “Sans Serif”.
mistakes that were done is relatively lower when Based on noise test, it can be concluded that the
the font used is “Sans Serif” rather than “Serif”. noise trend in the device is the middle right,
bottom right and middle bottom paper.

Fig 5, the graph above is one of the

effectiveness examining result through test font
method. The best result from test front occurs in
Arial font. Based on Fig 5, the best font test
occurs in the Arial font type. In Figure 5, it can be
seen that the results of scanning the Arial font
using Pi Camera can be detected by dominating
the number of letters detected by 55 letters per
font size tested. This is because Arial letters are
upright, simple and without ornament or are Sans
Serif which can affect tesseract OCR analysis on
the results of Pi Camera. At the time of testing the
8 pt font size the trend of the tesseract OCR error
at the time of character analysis was "w, m, q, s".

In this experiment, researchers

classified the amount of noise based on the letters
of the alphabet being tested. Noise on letters "a,
b, c, d, e, f, g, h, I, j, k, l, m, n, o, p, q, r, s, t, u, v,
w, x, y, z "is dominated by areas that are difficult
to identify or areas of noise, namely the right,
middle, lower right, and bottom middle paper.

4. Conclusion
SCA-BLE is the easiest tool for blind people
to read conventional book by using Tesseract
