Afghanistan and The Kite Runner Final Research Projects

In order to enhance our understanding of the novel, The Kite Runner, each of you will be
responsible for researching a particular topic related to Afghanistan’s history and culture. You will
become an expert on your topic, compile your research into a PowerPoint presentation and 3-page
research paper, and present your information to your classmates.

Possible research topics:

8. US invasion of Afghanistan after 9/11 22. Al-Qaeda
9. Geography and climate of Afghanistan 23. Slavery in Afghanistan
10. Kabul 24. Obama’s current policy in Afghanistan
11. Dress in Afghanistan 25. President Hamid Karzai
12. Ethnic groups and tribe warlords 26. Health care in Afghanistan
13. Education / schooling in Afghanistan 27. Orphans in Afghanistan
14. Afghan refugees 28. Marriage – forced and voluntary

 You will write a 3-page essay (no more than 3 pages!) which provides key information about
your topic. The challenge here is for you to decide what information is important and how to
organize this information in a short paper.
o Be sure to include MLA Citations within your paper and a Works Cited page.
o Submit this portion of the assignment to me via email by the due date, Wednesday, Nov.

o This is worth 100 points.
 You will prepare a ten [10] slide PowerPoint presentation about your topic which includes the
following:

1. A title slide which contains (5 points):


 Your topic
 a graphic, and
 your name.

2. Five [5] slides which contain content about your topic


using MLA Citation (10 points each).

3. Three [3] reflection slides which answers the following


questions (5 points):
 What was the most interesting about your
research?
 How did your research enhance your
understanding of Afghanistan?
 How did you decide to organize your information?

4. A Works Cited slide which lists the resources you cited in


your presentation (5 points).
 Additionally, you will present your information to the class on the date assigned to you by your
teachers (5 points). This is non-negotiable. We are relying on you to teach us about your topic.
