… “cultivate genuine happiness” …

 A sense of inner fulfillment based on what
we bring to the world rather than focusing on
what we get from it.
 Cultivator mode vs. Hunter-Gatherer mode

"Living the Learner Profile"

PHUKET I N T E R N A T I O N A L ACADEMY

WORKING TOWARDS BECOMING A uwc

The IB Learner Profile

Through SEL Lens
Inquirers
We nurture our curiosity and the skills to inquire into ourselves. We develop skills for inquiry and research and we know
how to learn independently. We learn with enthusiasm and sustain our love of learning throughout life.
Knowledgeable
Through a deeper knowledge of self and others we develop and use conceptual understanding, exploring knowledge
across a range of disciplines. We engage with issues and ideas that have local and global significance and can identify
how we can be constructively productive and create positive change in our communities.
Thinkers
We use critical and creative thinking skills to analyse and take responsible action on complex problems. We exercise
initiative in making reasoned, ethical decisions.
By developing a clear and focused mind, we think more deeply, compassionately and creatively.
Communicators
We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We are aware of the
pervasiveness of non‐verbal and other modes of communication and their importance in everyday life. We collaborate
effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
Principled
Through SEL‐awareness and SEL‐management, we act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness and
justice and with respect for the dignity and rights of people everywhere. We have cultivated a good heart and developed
a strong sense of ethics that guide our thoughts and actions. We take responsibility for our actions and their
consequences.
Open‐Minded
We critically appreciate our own cultures, personal histories and personal histories, as well as the values and traditions
of others. We seek and evaluate in a non‐judgemental way a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the
experience.
Caring
We are able to look within ourselves to exhibit deeper awareness, sincerity and respect. We show empathy, compassion
and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. We have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a
positive difference to the lives of others and in the world around us.
Risk‐takers
We approach u uncertainty with forethought and determination; we work independently and collaboratively to explore
new ideas and innovative strategies. We are resourceful and resilient particularly in matters of the heart in the face of
challenges and change.
Balanced
We understand the importance of balancing different aspects of our lives – intellectual, physical, spiritual and emotional
‐ to achieve well‐being for ourselves and others. We are not impulsive, enabling deliberate, thoughtful choices. We
recognize our interdependence with other people and with the world in which we live.
Reflective
Through finely tuned self‐observation skills, we examine our emotions, motives, desires and thoughts to enhance our
own learning and experience.
We work to understand our strengths and weaknesses in order to support our learning and personal development.

“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I

am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s
my personal approach that creates the
climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the
weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous
power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous
… I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is
my response that decides whether a crisis will
be escalated or de-escalated and a child
humanized or dehumanized.”
