DOMAIN F ARTIFACT REFLECTION 2

Abstract

This paper is a reflection on my rationale for choosing the three artifacts that are included in

Domain F of my Professional Develop Quest Portfolio (PDQP). Domain F of the California

Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) is about developing as a professional educator. Each

of the three artifacts included in my PDQP demonstrates my progress and growth within Domain

F of the TPEs. The following is my reflection on my rationale for choosing each artifact included

in my PDQP which can be found here: http://e-wool-pdqp.weebly.com/domain-f.html.

DOMAIN F ARTIFACT REFLECTION 3

Artifact 1

The first artifact I created is a literature review that focuses on professional learning

opportunities for science teachers. TPE 13 within Domain F of the California Teaching

Performance Expectations (TPEs) is about professional growth and states that teachers should

“improve their teaching practices by soliciting feedback and engaging in cycles of planning,

teaching, reflecting, discerning problems, and applying new strategies” (TPEs, 2013, p. 17). I

created this literature review to discuss new professional learning opportunities for science

teachers since the recent debut of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). It is important

that teachers update and improve their content knowledge and teaching skills, especially when a

new curriculum has been adopted. The NGSS have led to a shift away from traditional science

teaching to focus on problem-solving and scientific inquiry. Professional learning has changed

for science teachers because of this curriculum change and it is crucial that science teachers take

advantages of these opportunities for professional growth in order to remain effective teachers.

Creating this literature review as an artifact for Domain F of the TPEs was part of my research

into the new professional learning opportunities that have proven to be most effective for

teachers.

Artifact 2

The second artifact I collected is a picture of the Safe Space poster I keep in my

classroom. This poster makes it clear to my students that I am an ally for students belonging to

the LBGTQ community and that my classroom is a safe place for them to be when they are at

school. It is one of the ways I make my classroom a safe learning environment for all of my

students and let them know that discrimination of any kind will not be tolerated. The reason or

including this is that TPE 12 under Domain F of the TPEs is about the professional, legal, and

ethical obligations teachers have to their career and their students. It states that teachers must

“maintain a non-hostile classroom environment [and] model ethical behaviors for students”

(TPEs, 2013, p. 17). Having this poster in my room and following its guidelines is one of the

ways that I meet this TPE and ensure that I am creating the most effective learning environment

for my students and meeting the professional, legal, and ethical obligations expected of me.

Artifact 3

The third artifact I created is a five-year professional development plan. According to

Domain F of the TPEs, teachers must “use reflection and feedback to formulate and prioritize

goals for increasing their subject matter knowledge and teaching effectiveness” (2013, p 17).

Through reflection and feedback, I created this professional development plan that organizes my

goals for the next five years. It helps me to organize and prioritize my goals so that I have a

concrete plan for my professional development journey. I created this artifact for Domain F

because it shows my commitment to professional growth. It exhibits my awareness of the steps I

need to take to advance my career and improve my subject matter knowledge and teaching

effectiveness. I will be able to refer to this plan in each year of my teaching career and use it as a

guideline when I create my next five-year plan, once this one is completed.
