Lesson Plan Format


Teacher: Amy Brown
Grade: Fourth
Content Area: Social Studies: New Hampshire Government

1. Content and Standards:


● SS:CV:4:2.1: Identify the individual functions of the three branches of government and the
organization of New Hampshire state government.

2. Prerequisites:
● Students should have background information on the three branches of state government and their
basic functions. Students should know what a bill is.

3. Essential Questions: Why is it important to know and understand our states government?

4. Materials and Equipment:

● Teacher Laptop
● Smartboard/projector
● Student chromebooks/Google Classroom
● Printed copies of bills

5. Instructional Objective: State what students will know and be able to do at the end of this lesson.
Fill in the blanks: “Students will be able to describe the process a bill goes through in the
Legislative Branch of New Hampshire to become a bill by completing the questionnaire that goes
with the lesson and presenting to the class.”

6. Instructional Procedures: List instructional strategies and learning experiences that are in
alignment with the objective(s). Include information about what teaching strategies you will use
to engage students. Include information about what type of technology, manipulatives, etc. you
will use to facilitate students meeting the objectives.

Before: Whole group discussion/review:What is a bill? How does it become a law?

During: Students work in 3 groups of 6 students. Each student in the group receives the same bill.
The students highlight and discuss what they believe is important information. Students may use
the website on each bill to look up more information. Students complete the worksheet together,
asking specific questions about the bill.
After: Each group of students explain their bill to the class. As a class we compare and contrast
each bill/law once the groups all present.

7. Assessment: Each student group completes the questions asked about the bill. The group presents
their information to the class and answers questions.

8. Differentiated Instruction: The students were grouped together purposefully, to make sure that as
a group, all the students could participate and complete the work assigned. The chromebooks can
assist with reading information and also speech to text for writing if students aren’t able to do the
grade level reading and writing on their own.
