Introduction

Aqualy was made to be a company of individuals that would want to help better their community

by volunteering time and efforts to different organizations to help achieve their own goals in

protecting human and aquatic marine life.

Pre-face

Aloha, my name is Kaleigh Trice and my partner is Jessica Priest. Our project is

to make the public more aware about Marine Animal Safety. We would like to educate people

about how important marine animal safety is. There are so many different effects on marine life

and people don't realize how important it is for us to work together and make a difference. Us as

people are one of the main reasons that the marine life is dying. This project is important to me

because I care so much for the ocean and what's in it. I love animals so much and wish I could

make a change or even a slight difference for the animals. I have to much care for the ocean to

just to sit here and watch it slowly die. The ocean takes over so much of the world and without it

the world wouldn't be the same.

This project needs to be done because it's our future that could be corrupted because of

polluting, depleted food sources, harmful interactions with tourists, and major climate change

with our oceans. This project is different than others because we are going to be taking on

different funding for places like the Maui Ocean Center, we will also do beach cleanups to aware

the public about what's going on. This project isn't just set on having one alternative its set on

many different alternatives to make a change.

Driving Question

“How can we as students, volunteer our time and energy to help inform the community about the

importance of marine animal safety?”

Goals

We have many different goals that we would like to achieve by the end of this project.

We would like to ultimately watch the ocean grow and thrive again. Another goal we would like

to achieve is to raise awareness about how important Marine life safety is. We would like to

partner with Maui county's non profit organizations to see what we can do as volunteer work to

improve the island. We made an instagram account called “Aqualy” to find more connections,

find support for our company, also for people to reach out and support our merchandise. We are

planning on making bracelets and maybe other products. Not only will this project be a helping

hand to volunteer work but it will make a difference for our ocean animals. We would like to

fundraise at least $500

Content Knowledge

The content knowledge that this project will follow will be to learn about what things

affect the Marine life. I've done lots of research on how sunscreen, tourists, trash, and climate

change affects our marine life. Knowing as much as I can will help me be able to explain to the

public about it. I will also learn about how much I can give to the community. I've already

contacted people to see in what ways I can give my help.

21 Century Skills

All of the 21 century skills that this project will include Global Awareness, Information

Skills, Communication Skills, Thinking And Problem Solving Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Self

Directional Skills, Financial, Economic, & Business Literacy, and Civic Literacy & Engagement.

Global awareness will be included in this project because this is a global issue. Marine animals

around the world are suffering. Information skills will be important to my project because I need

to find lots of information on this issue. I also chose communication as another skill because I

need to have communication with my partner, interviews, and also the ability to communicate to

the public about my vision with this project. For Thinking and problem solving because not

everything is going to go as plan and I have to be ready to stop and think to modify a problem in

my project. For Interpersonal skills, since we are working in partners that takes a big toll on how

the project is going to work, and how we work together to get things done when they are needed

to be done. Self-directional skills can play a larger part as well, since we would need to do a lot

of organizing on our own and work on certain things separately. Financial, Economic, &

Business Literacy will be included in this project because I will have to make big decisions on

business process and personal economic choices. Civic Literacy & Engagement will be another

big part of this project because it involves our community and with the help of our community

we can make this change happen for marine life.

Limitations

Some limitations that could happen within the project, are not being able to finish all the

stuff we would want to finish in time if we don’t have a set schedule for the class for the rest of

the year. Another limitation would be us not being able to sell the bracelets at fourth friday.

Selling at fourth friday is one of the bigger parts of our project and it would be a big setback if

we weren't able to. I have heard that we always have a booth to sell at but i'm not 100% sure.

Another setback we might endure is not having enough community service to do especially if

some of the organizations are off island. Another setback would be having to reschedule times to

meet people for interview or volunteer work. I know there will always be problems in project but

if we problem solve I know we can figure out a way.

Methodology

The methodology we will be using for this project may vary due to all the things we have

planned. Some of our main ideas are to, sell bracelets at fourth friday and use the money for the

non profit organizations. To use social media like instagram to have a group of followers to help

support the marine life. We might even take video footage to put on youtube or a blog to show

our progress. Lastly another idea would be using the video footage and showing it around school

on KCNN.

Resources

The resources we are going to for selling bracelets is basic bracelet materials. The

bracelets we are planning on making will include yarn or thread, and different beads or shells.

Every bracelet sold will have its own significance and include a piece of paper that has

something written about the marine life safety. For human resources we have most of the

contacts for everyone we need for interviews and information from. We also have the companies

and organizations emails for beach cleanups and volunteer work. (Down below)

Budget

We would like to fundraise as much money as we can for the MOC and other non-profit

organizations. This money will go to help fund the organizations that need the money. We are

going to try to not spend to much out of pocket money because we have most of the resources

needed. If we spend money on supplies some of the money will go towards our supplies but the

rest will go towards the organizations.

Items

The items will vary because we haven't quite put them into place yet or bought them. Here is a

rough draft of what we were thinking we would need, we have some beads in mind and we have

found them on the internet, have an idea.We have looked up some places that sell these as well.

Annotated bibliography part 1

“10 Ways to Help Save the Ocean.” The Water Column,

www.oneworldoneocean.com/blog/entry/10_ways_to_help_save_the_ocean.

I chose this website because I would like to help with marine life safety. This article talks

about ways to contribute to help our oceans one at a time. I want our oceans to still be

here years and years down the road. One person can make a difference, but think how

much greater an impact you’ll have if you recruit your friends to the cause!

Newsletter- “Are Aquariums the Way to Save Endangered Marine Life?” Awesome Ocean, 1

Nov. 2015,

http://awesomeocean.com/top-stories/are-aquariums-the-way-to-save-endangered-marine

-life/

I chose this news article because it talk about how aquariums are helping marine life. We,

people are the reason why lots of marine life is suffering and dying. entanglement in

fishing gear, severely depleted food resources, deaths from diseases and toxic algal

blooms, changing patterns of predation, harmful, even lethal, interactions with tourists’

boats and commercial shipping vessels, potentially devastating effects of climate change.

Marine parks and aquariums have long been important contributors to ocean conservation

education and public awareness. They provide opportunities for visitors to experience

fascinating marine mammals experiences that foster a respect and caring for these

animals and their environments.

“Hawaii Just Banned Your Favorite Sunscreen to Protect Its Coral Reefs.” The Washington Post,

r-favorite-sunscreen-to-protect-its-coral-reefs/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.427da58e2a85.

I chose this news article because it talk about how sunscreen is being banned in the

hawaiian islands. Sunscreen is one of the main reasons sea life and coral is dying. Not

only does it affect the marine life it effects the residing ecosystems. The chemical

oxybenzone and octinoxate is what harms our reef and marine life. Since the sunscreen

that had those chemicals in it were so harmful that is why they are making efforts to ban

it. This article is reliable because its a news article and everything said in the article is

valid. This article also stated how the senate wanted to ban the sunscreen and how people

should be more aware about going green and using organic reef and marine safe

sunscreen. People need to realize that coral reefs are crucial to the ocean and without

them our ocean is slowly dying. People also pose the greatest threat to coral reefs.

Overfishing and destructive fishing, pollution, warming, changing ocean chemistry, and
13 Trice

invasive species are all taking a huge toll. In some places, reefs have been entirely

destroyed, and in many places reefs today are a pale shadow of what they once were.

“Home.” Love The Sea, www.lovethesea.org/.

The Love The Sea organization just started up and they have a vision to make a change to

help the ocean and the environment. Love the Sea supports a local & global network of

ocean stewards, working towards the eradication of plastic pollution and marine debris in

the world’s oceans, achieved through effective direct action. They work with the Hawaii

Wildlife Fund and the Surfrider Foundation to help aid them as well. One main thing they

follow is the L.E.A.F. Legislate (creating awareness), Activate (activating more

volunteers), Educate (teaching people about the environment), and Fund (the ocean aid is

helping all of these people to make sure that they can help keep the ocean safe)

NationalGeographic. “Kids Take Action Against Ocean Plastic | Short Film Showcase.”

YouTube, YouTube, 21 Feb. 2017, www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKFV9IquMXA.

I chose this video on “kids take action against plastic” because this video is about our

hawaiian island and how our island is basically a filter for trash and pollution. This video

shows kids who stood up and cleaned up beaches and made people aware. Even though

all the trash is ending up in hawaii from the currents its everyone in the world throwing

away plastic. People throw away over 50 thousand pounds of styrofoam every day.

Hawaii as a state is the highest capital user of styrofoam. It's so detrimental because its

going into the food chain. Whenever we eat the fish the fish could have ate all the plastic

and styrofoam waste.

Annotated Bibliography Part 4

Simeone, Claire A., et al. “A Systematic Review of Changes in Marine Mammal Health in North

America, 1972-2012: The Need for a Novel Integrated Approach.” PLOS ONE, Public Library of

Science, https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0142105

I chose this scholarly article because explains that in recent decades, the altered state of

marine ecosystems around the world have been increasingly linked to anthropogenic

activities, such as urbanization, pollution, and climate change. This has led to greater

awareness of the importance of ecosystem health among managers, policy makers, and

the general public. marine mammals often are cited as sentinels for ocean and human

health because they are long-lived, feed at upper trophic levels, have fat stores that

accumulate anthropogenic toxins, and are vulnerable to many of the same pathogens,

toxins, and chemicals as humans. Marine mammals are charismatic marine species, and

as such, mortalities and changes in their health draw attention from the public, regulators,

and managers to issues such as ocean health, ocean pollution, pathogen spread, and

harmful algal bloom effects.

For the last source it would be my expert interview. I'm planning on getting that done next week

wednesday and I already have all my questions I need to ask Tommy Cutt.

Faculty interview

For my faculty interview I would like to ask Ms.Wilson. I chose her because she knows alot

about the MOC and she's also a Biology teacher. I know she knows alot about how much

affected marine life and also has contacts with people that we can use for our project.
