 DEAR FRIEND,
I’m constantly asked to share why our partners are important
to us here at Joyce Meyer Ministries. And every time, I wonder
if my words could ever fully convey how much we appreciate
and thank God for our partners. If you are a partner with this
ministry, you literally make every single thing we do possible.
You know, I’ve traveled the globe and I see so many people in
need. But it doesn’t overwhelm me anymore because I know
we can alleviate their pain—something that’s possible because
of our partners. When we are able to share the Gospel of Jesus
Christ with the hurting and meet their physical needs, we begin
to see lasting change in the hearts and lives of so many.
I can’t tell you how much my life has changed since I began
to truly understand the importance of reaching out to help
others. I realized that if I really love God, then it should be a
natural thing to reach out and help somebody else. That’s just
part of being a Christian.
But I also realized that I can’t do it all on my own. That’s
where partnership comes in. When you become a partner,
you’re able to bring the pieces that I don’t have. You bring
your prayers, finances and encouragement. You’re helping
us spread the Gospel all around the world.

Recently we had Annie Lobert, founder of Hookers for Jesus,
on our TV program. What really excited me about her testimony
was that after she found Jesus through our Enjoying Everyday
Life TV program, she became a partner to help others who
needed help too. She even founded Hookers for Jesus, a
ministry reaching out to women trapped in a life of prostitution.
I think it’s important for you to know that your partnership
goes even further than the outreaches of Joyce Meyer
Ministries. You see, it was our partners who made it possible
for Annie to view the TV program. Now she’s helping others,
who will go on to help even more. I don’t believe we’ll ever
fully know the impact of what partnership can do to reach
others with the life-changing Gospel of Jesus Christ.
So what does partnership mean to us? Everything.

Plain and simple: Partnership is
several people joining together to
accomplish a task or meet a need that
is greater than what they could do on
their own.

The Bible says in Acts 20:35, In
everything I did, I showed you that by
this kind of hard work we must help the
weak, remembering the words the Lord
Jesus himself said: “It is more blessed to
give than to receive” (NIV).
I think a lot of people want to help.
Maybe they don’t have the time
or the knowledge, but they have
fi nances. This is why we partner
together to accomplish the tasks God
has called us to.
Some can do more than others, but
all God asks you to do is what you can
do. By the grace and mercy of God,
we have many doors open to us. We
want to continue helping the people
we are helping, but we also want to
walk through new doors and help
even more.
I don’t ever want to be the kind of
person who just says, “Well, I’m
doing enough. I’m satisfied.” No, I
want to help as many people as I
possibly can. We need you to do that,
and I believe you need us because

together, we can do so much more
than we can on our own.
WHERE DOES MY MONEY GO?
Our partners are digging water wells
in areas where there is no clean
drinking water. That might not mean
much until you watch a mom walk five
to ten miles one way—one way—every
day with a stone pot on her head just
to get enough water to take care of her
family for that one day.
They’re also feeding hungry children,
helping widows, building orphan-
ages, visiting prisons, providing free
medical care…and so much more.
Each year more than 80 percent of all
money raised through partnership
goes directly into these outreaches,
either by us helping directly or
supporting already established
ministries, to reach even more than
we could on our own.

CONNECTING
WITH PEOPLE
Is It Learned or Natural Talent?

We seldom consider ourselves to be boring or out of touch communicators, yet

oftentimes that’s exactly what we are. We may be passionate about our message,
but we don’t understand how to craft it in a way that resonates with our audi-
ence. As a result, others tune us out, and we have difficulty influencing them.

What Makes People Listen?

Before passing along information, great communicators make a connection.

They have a handful of qualities that garner the interest and attention of their
audience. By harnessing these qualities, communicators earn the right to be
heard, and their words carry weight.

veloping an atomic bomb. Alarmed, the American scientist
decided to alert President Franklin Roosevelt.
Lacking direct access to the president, Szilárd drafted a letter
and then convinced Albert Einstein to sign it. With Einstein’s
name affixed to it, the letter of warning reached President
Roosevelt’s desk and prompted him to form a commission to
research nuclear fission. That commission later became the
Manhattan Project, which invented the atomic bomb and
helped the United States end World War II.
Leo´ Szilárd’s letter to President Franklin Roosevelt
illustrates an important principle of connection: borrowed
influence. Szilárd leveraged his relationship with Albert
Einstein to get his message to the White House.
One of the quickest ways to gain credibility with an
individual, a group, or an audience is to borrow it from
someone who already has established trust with them. It’s
the basis of celebrity endorsements, sales referrals, and
word-of-mouth advertising. Who you know can open the
door for you to connect with someone.
Insight also opens the door to connection. Szilárd’s impres-
sive credentials as a physicist earned him the respect and
consideration of his colleague, Albert Einstein. In turn,
Einstein’s expertise as a scientist gave him a platform from
which to communicate with the leader of the United States.
If you have an area of expertise and generously share it

with others, you give people reasons to respect you and
develop a sense of connection with you. We tend to listen
to people who have specialized knowledge. That’s why trial
lawyers call upon credentialed witnesses, and universities
hire people with advanced degrees to be professors.

Individuals who perform at a high level in their profession
gain instant credibility with others. Basketball phenom
LeBron James exuded so much ability as a high school senior
that Nike signed him to a $90 million endorsement deal at
age eighteen. On account of his tremendous talent, people
who have never met James admire him, want to be like him,

and feel connected to him.His ability carries so much influ-
ence that people will even mimic his shoe selection.
When people of rare ability speak, others listen—even if
the area of their skill has nothing to do with the advice
they give. For instance, LeBron James endorses State Farm
Insurance. Now, does James have expertise in the insur-
ance industry? Probably not, but he’s arguably the best
basketball player in the world, and people listen to him
because of what he can do.
People connect with those who sacrifice for the good of
others. For example, each year Gallup conducts a poll to
determine the profession most admired by Americans.
Since being added to the list of professions in 1999,
nursing has claimed the top spot every year but one. That
lone exception? Firefighters, who took first in 2001 after
the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center Towers.
If you have made sacrifices or overcome painful obstacles,
many people will relate to you. Notice how much respect is
given to veterans of the armed services; we admire them
going into harm’s way to protect our country.

Think about the weight that is given to the words of the
civil rights leaders who helped to pave the way for im-
proved race relations in America. Or, consider the regard
we have for those who’ve survived cancer. We tend to
listen to people who have persevered through adversity,

especially when they’ve undergone personal costs in order
to serve others. H
Conclusion
These four qualities of connection are by no means com-
prehensive. I’m sure you can think of other reasons people
connect. The point is that you must take whatever you have
and use it to connect with others. The more methods of
connection you have, and the better you become at using
them, the greater your chance of connecting with people.

The Day Before My Trip
The beginning. I haven’t left yet. I’m feeling like I won’t be
able to handle this emotionally. I am thinking I should just

Arrived in Nicaragua
Got to know the team today. We spent some time at the
hotel discussing what we will be doing. We met a lady who
was so happy we were here just to help the people of her
country. Honestly, I am glad to be here too.

Just the Right Medication
We took a long bus ride to the village. The conditions were
not what I expected. There were miles and miles of trash.
Some of the houses were made of tin, cardboard, blocks,
and plastic. It was their “neighborhood,” much like ours,
except for poverty like I have never seen.

The clinic (also the village church) was a bigger version

of the houses we’d just seen. Throughout the day mostly
women and children stood in line for hours to be treated.

Today, my job was taking temperatures and directing

people to wherever they needed to go. One of the ladies
who stood out the most to me was a lady who came in a
wheelchair. She was in such horrible pain—her legs were
so swollen and she couldn’t walk.

I found out later from Ashley Wilkins, Medical Outreach
Coordinator for Joyce Meyer Ministries, that the lady was
diabetic and suffering from a painful infection in her leg.
But the best part of the story was that we had exactly the
right medication for her.

Ashley said she’d never ordered this type of medicine
before, but really felt led to for this trip. It ended up being
the last one available when she ordered it. I guess God
had that medication planned for this lady all along. I
can’t imagine what would have happened to her leg if she Magenta
wouldn’t have gotten that medicine.

Everyone is tired but feeling really good about what we

did today. Just as I was thinking that I didn’t do that much
today, the Lord reminded me when He said in Matthew
25:40, “If you have done it to the least of these, you have

Feeding the Children
Today we went to the same village. We saw 744 beautiful
people today. Our dentists saw 89 patients, pulling and
filling teeth and performing cleanings. And 39 people
received Jesus!
Hand of Hope also runs a full-time feeding program in
this village and we got the opportunity to visit with them.
Today the 225 children came from all over the village to
eat their one—sometimes only—meal for the day.
The mayor of the village thanked us for coming to serve
the people. I cried because I felt thankful they let us come.
I was the one being blessed and I felt honored to be there.

Fast Paced in Managua

Another amazing day! I got the opportunity to work in the
pharmacy. It was my kind of work—fast paced and busy
from the time we set up until 5 p.m. when we closed down.
We saw 880 patients today. The dentist was very busy too!
The place we were today was a church in Managua, about
40 minutes from our hotel.

Caring for the Elderly
I cannot believe the week is almost over. We are all very
tired, but it has been worth every minute.
Today the clinic was in a different part of Managua. We
drove through a wealthy neighborhood. Then we took a
left turn, and suddenly we were on a dirt road, in a very
poverty-stricken community. Wealth to poverty in just
one turn.
We ended up at a one-room, cute little church. We quickly
unloaded and made stations to get ready for the 200 or
so elderly people who were eagerly waiting for us. They
were so beautiful. They applauded us when we walked in!
One of our other volunteers used to live in Managua.
She told us that while she lived there, she visited the
area we were in today and saw the elderly digging
through the garbage to fi nd food. God put it on her heart
to start a feeding program for the elderly. Even though
she has moved, the feeding program still takes place
once a week.
It is very sad, but in Nicaragua most families kick the
elderly out on the street because they can no longer
contribute to the family financially. So they are left home-
less, hungry and without any medical care. That’s why it’s
so important we’re here this week.
I took a few pictures, then walked down a couple rows
and shook hands and gave hugs. I so badly wished I
could speak their language. Each one looked worn-out
by life and completely exhausted, but when I addressed
them with a smile and a touch, they instantly lit up! One
gentleman gave me a hug and kiss on the check. He was
so cute. One language that we all have in common is love.
I worked in the pharmacy again today. We set it up in
a 10 ft x 10 ft room. It was tight but we worked it out.
We served 476 patients today and our dentist did 247
extractions—some patients even had to have all their
teeth pulled.
The children here are generally healthier than I thought
they would be. I am thankful, because it’s hard enough to
see the elderly hurting.

When David faced the giant Goliath, he

already defeated, and it gave him courage in
his current situation.
If you’re going through a difficult time right
now, let me remind you that this probably
isn’t the first challenge you’ve faced. You
survived the last one (and probably learned
some valuable lessons through it) and you
will survive this one too. Better days are on
their way. God promises.
Let the Storm Subside
I have faced so many storms in my life—
some like the quick afternoon storms that
are common in summertime and some that
seemed like category four hurricanes. If I
have learned anything about weathering
those storms, it has been that they don’t last

forever—and I don’t need to make major
decisions in the midst of them.
Thoughts and feelings run wild in the midst
of crises, but those are exactly the times we
need to be careful about making decisions.
I often say to myself, Let emotions subside
before you decide. We must remain calm and
discipline ourselves to focus on doing what
we can do and trusting God to do what we
can’t do.
Know Who to Contact

To conquer negative thoughts and cultivate
positive ones, you and I must stay in touch
with God—the One who sees the big picture
of our lives and who orchestrates everything
that involves us. He makes sure everything

that needs to happen in our lives happens
at the right time, moves at the appropriate
speed, and causes us to arrive safely at the
destinations He has planned for us.
If we want to stay on track with God, we Magenta

and Caleb? They were the two spies who
reported that Israel could overtake its
enemy to win the Promised Land. The other
ten spies didn’t have the same outlook—and
they never arrived at the Promised Land.

Train your mind to think positively in every
situation and train your tongue to speak
positively to everyone you meet. Embrace
God’s way of thinking. Think like this: If
anything can go right, it will; nothing is as
difficult as it appears; everything is more
rewarding than it appears; if anything good
can happen to anybody, it will happen to me.
Pay Attention to
What’s Going Right
Very few situations are 100 percent nega-
tive. Most of the time we can find something
good in every circumstance—even if we
really have to be diligent about it.
Let’s say you’re a stay-at-home mom with
young children and your husband leaves the
house for work each day. Your four-year-old
son colors on the walls, cuts holes in his new
pants, kicks his sister, and spills grape juice
all over your freshly-cleaned carpet. Let’s also
say he finally learned to apologize to his sister
without being reminded, confessed to cutting
his pants instead of saying “The dog did it,”
makes an attempt to clean his room, and says
you’re the best mom in the whole world.

I can’t emphasize too strongly how impor-
tant it is to avoid seeing things as totally
negative. We need to learn to look at a
situation until we can clearly point out
something positive about it. Why? Because
it takes practice to be positive!
Seek the Truth for Yourself
Ultimately, we can never move beyond what
we think and believe is the truth. Many
people today don’t even bother to think
rationally about what they believe and end
up building their entire lives on beliefs
that simply are not true. Whatever the news
media, a celebrity or a group of friends say,

suddenly becomes “truth” to them.
Believing what others say rather than
exploring God’s Word for yourself will actu-
ally limit you and even keep you from doing
what God created you to do. But, if you will

contend for the truth, embrace it and build
your life upon it, you will succeed in every
endeavor.
I challenge you to start here: Think of the
single thought that has limited you more Magenta
than anything else. Do you believe you can
change it? You probably can’t. But God can.

Faith. It’s a word Christians throw around a lot.
Do you have faith? You may not think you do, or you may
feel like your faith is weak and puny. But consider this:
Have you ever flown on an airplane without meeting the
pilot? Have you ever eaten a meal without knowing who
cooked it?
As Christians, we all have faith to some degree. The Bible
says in Romans 12, that each of us is given “a measure of
faith.” We operate in faith all the time and don’t even
think about it.
For example, some of you reading this article have teenagers
you send off to school every day. That requires some faith.
And we all need a little faith every time we drive in traffic.

You might not feel like a spiritual giant of faith, but you
can take hope in God’s Word that says when you accept
Christ, you get a measure of faith planted inside you.
Is Your Faith All Talk?
Some of you might say, “Well, I have faith. I believe
in Jesus.” Frankly, it’s one thing to say you have
faith, but it’s an entirely different matter to apply
your faith to life’s challenges.
When the storms of life come (and they do for all of us), do
you stay calm, cool and collected? Or do you allow fear to
overpower your faith? Do you give the situation completely
over to God, or do you try to figure everything out?

 It’s easy for us to feel like we’ve got great faith when
things go well or play out like we want them to—those
are the “mountain-top experiences.” And it’s easy for us
to have faith when something new comes along and life
is exciting.
But stuff happens. And when stuff happens, how does
your faith respond?
I’m not just referring to big dramatic events that take
place…I’m also referring to the little things that pop up
and can easily sidetrack you.
For example, recently I was at a conference, and I had a
Starbucks coffee waiting for me after one of the sessions.
I absolutely love Starbucks coffee. And the coffee was
inside one of these big, double-sided Starbucks mugs
that keep your coffee warm for a long time. The mug is a
copper color, and I really love to use it when I drink coffee.
But what about when you have a problem—do you go plop
down in the arms of Jesus and say, “I’m asking You to take
care of this and I believe You will.” Do you release your
faith through prayer, line up what you speak with God’s
promises, and do whatever He asks you to do without
trying to figure things out?
Now that’s the way to release your faith! Give your
circumstance over to Jesus and be confident that He’s
got it all under control.
Your life will change dramatically once you unleash your
faith. Don’t just have it in your heart—let it out, put it to the
test and be amazed at what God does through your life!

 The word “free” is music to my ears.
Every time I say it, I can feel freedom
flowing from the top of my head to the
soles of my feet. Each time I sign “free
indeed” inside another copy of my
autobiography, Twist of Faith, I breathe
a prayer of thanks. And I smile.
But it hasn’t always been this easy.
There was a time in my life when I
hated who I had become. I thought I’d
crossed the line where God could no
longer offer me grace.
I was drowning in an ocean of
pain, blame and shame, and no one
realized how I was feeling inside.
My guilt overwhelmed me and I was
left with a burden too heavy to bear.
I thought God was through with
me—but I was wrong.
Psalm 40:1-3 is my testimony: God
turned to me, heard my cry for help,
and then came to my rescue. And in
the midst of all my pain, He created a
purpose for me—one of which I never
could have dreamed.
In 1988, my husband, Jonas, and I
started Auntie Anne’s Soft Pretzels
so we could afford to do something
else—open a counseling center. See,
we’d experienced a lot of healing in
our marriage and wanted to share

When our journey with Auntie Anne’s
came to an end, it was a bittersweet
time. The company had become our
life; the franchisees were our family.
But I had learned by then that the
seasons in our journey come and go,
and sometimes you have to put down
what you’ve got in order to take hold
of the next thing God has for you.
God began His work of redemption
in my life some time ago, but it is a
work that continues—from a life of
sin to God’s rescue; from the hope of
a dream to the reality of a thriving
ministry and a worldwide pretzel
company.
To this day, He is still restoring
to me all of the things the enemy
stole: years of marriage, my rela-
tionships with my children, my
happiness—freedom.
I would never have guessed in a
million years that I’d be where I am
now. But that’s what happens when
you serve a God of second chances.
Let me close with a few words from

feelings to this day:

Bring the Past to Life

Do you enjoy history? Maybe you answered “yes” to this question…but statistically,
there’s a good chance you answered “no.” Why is that?

Could it be due to the way you were previously taught history? And I’m not refer-
ring to specific techniques of teaching. If you grew up attending a public school,
there’s a good chance the person who taught you history had a secular worldview.

It’s impossible for anyone to teach something without their own worldview af-
fecting the material—history included. And frankly, looking at history through a
secular worldview makes the material boring.

Not long ago I defined the term “Christian nation” because it’s a term that I often
use in my articles and conference talks. In a nutshell, a Christian nation is founded
upon biblical principles, whose values, society and institutions have largely been
shaped by those principles.

Another term I use often is secular worldview, or other similar terms like secular
humanist, or just secular. I think it’s important for people to understand what
these terms mean also.

After defining the term, I’ll explain why this is important in regard to history.

What Is a Secular Worldview?
First, what is a worldview? A worldview is a set of determined beliefs through
which a person interprets all of reality. It might be described like a pair of glasses
that one uses to see things. 1

 AMERICA AT ITS BEST who says history has to be boring?
Secular means worldly rather than spiritual. It is mostly
used to communicate a separation, or distancing from
religion. What is interesting though about this term is
that secular humanism has been deemed a religion by our
courts, and many people who call themselves humanists or
secular humanists would agree that their worldview is reli-
gious in nature. In fact, written in the Humanist Manifestos I
and II, humanism is described as “a philosophical, religious
and moral point-of-view.”2
And the Humanist Manifestos also calls secular humanism
a faith: “These affirmations [in the Manifestos] are not
a final credo or dogma but an expression of a living and
growing faith.”3
So, even though a secular humanist has a “faith,” it’s impor-
tant to remember that their faith is not in Jesus Christ or any
god for that matter. Theologically, this is also called atheism,
a term most everyone is familiar with. Secular humanists
believe only in the natural. They believe that the Universe
and all of creation just naturally occurred—thus, Darwin’s
theory of evolution fits into their beliefs.4
Most secular humanists also reject moral absolutes. In other
words, since God doesn’t exist, then there is no absolute, set-
in-stone moral or ethical code. So this leads them to practice
moral relativism. This means that people are to be flexible
with their morals and make their own judgment calls on
proper behavior based on the situation at hand.5

Do you see how this mindset could affect a history
teacher’s presentation?
Sadly, this humanistic (man-centered) worldview has become
entrenched in our culture today. It didn’t happen overnight…
it took several decades but gained a lot of momentum when
Christianity was taken out of the school system. Now, even
many Christians have secular worldviews.
Providential History Can Change Your Life
Many people lost interest in history during their child-
hood because they were taught the subject from a secular
worldview. When history is taught from this atheistic
angle, it becomes simply the mechanical routine of memo-
rizing dates and events. It has no cohesiveness. Without
God, no real meaning…
This is why I’m so passionate about Providential history!
This is simply examining history from a Christian perspec-
tive, which brings history to life and gives it significance.
Providential history doesn’t only apply to American history,
but to all of history, starting with the book of Genesis!
Providential history is acknowledging God’s hand in world
events through Divine Providence. Nineteenth century
eminent historian George Bancroft once said, “Providence is
the light of history and the soul of the world. God is in history
and all history has a unity because God is in it.”6
Let’s remember what the late Rev. A.W. Foljambe once said
(in my own words)—the more thoroughly a nation knows
its history, the more it will recognize and understand God’s
hand in current and previous events, and our faith and fervor
for God will draw us closer to Him.7 But if we look at history
as only a bunch of human-based random acts, or if we ignore
history, our nation will drift further away from the Lord.
Providential history was once taught throughout our nation’s
educational system. It is crucial for us, as Americans in 2010,
to once again pick up this amazing knowledge.
A good place to start is the book America’s Providential
History, which changed my life.

Going to church was something I
started doing at a very young age—
pretty much since birth. Of course, my
parents had a lot to do with that. Some
of my earliest memories take place in
church. I remember one time standing
up in front of the whole congregation
with a group of kids—I was about five
years old. We were supposed to be
singing, but my friend Robert and I
were pointing at people and laughing.
My parents had a little talk with me
after that.
But I enjoyed going to church as
a kid…in fact, by age ten I was a
veteran church-goer. My attendance
was great—rarely missed a Sunday
or Wednesday night. I knew all the
Bible stories kids learn in Sunday
school…Noah’s Ark, Daniel in the
Lion’s Den, David and Goliath—and
the story of Jesus.

Don’t Forget to Finish What He Started

But there was something I still needed
to do—accept Jesus Christ into my heart
and make Him my Lord and Savior.
So, on Easter Sunday, at the ripe old age
of ten, I finally did it. And my destiny
changed forever.
You see, it doesn’t matter what age you
are—you can be 10, 25, 45 or 85—you
can go to church your entire life and
still miss the whole point.
Listen, there could be a good reason
why you’re reading this—I don’t want
you to miss this, so let me ask you
directly—Have you ever asked Jesus to
come into your heart and be the Lord
and Savior of your life?
If you’re not 100 percent sure, take
the time to pray this simple prayer:

Jesus, thank You for dying on the
cross so that I may have eternal life.

best part is that you’ve just received
eternal life! (See John 3:16.)
Having a personal relationship with
Jesus is the best thing you could
ever do in life! Because it’s not about

MAGAZINE. HERE ARE A COUPLE OF RECENT LETTERS WE’VE RECEIVED FROM READERS.
Dear Joyce Meyer Ministries:
I teach 5th through 8th grade at a rural
ses Christian school in Ohio. I read the article
g “Children of the Incas” from the December/
January (2009) magazine, to my students.
It was about children in Peru who were
living in severe poverty and suffering from
intestinal parasites. At the time, my 6th
graders were studying the Incas in social
studies and my 7th and 8th graders were
learning about intestinal parasites in
science.
When I read the article to my students, the
compassion on their faces was something
special to see. They immediately said, “We
have to help!” By skipping “treats” like
Wendy’s or McDonald’s for lunch, they
saved $200 to help purchase antibiotics
for those children in Peru.
This article provided a good “teaching
moment” for me to talk about God’s love
for all of us and how He wants us to help
others. We will continue to pray for the
children in Peru—and for your wonderful
ministry.

Dear Joyce,
In February our home was hit by a
tornado. I had just received the February
(2008) issue of your magazine about an
hour before and read an article about
knowing how much God loves you.
Afterward, I prayed to God to just show
me His love and let me feel His presence
all around me.
Shortly after that, the tornado hit! My
mom and I ran to the bathroom, got in the
bathtub and held each other tight. My dad
tried to make it but was sucked back into
the hall, which collapsed on him, pinning
him there with nails in his back!
They were both screaming, thinking we
were all going to die. But I began to
pray so loud I could only hear myself. I
wanted to be sure God heard me over

that tornado! Suddenly, the Holy Spirit just
came over me with peace. I felt God’s love
all over me and my family as if He’d just
wrapped His arms around us! Then that
article came to my mind and I could hear
