24th /25th NOVEMBER 2018 – FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING
Dear Parishioners,
Some years ago, I was with a group of
children discussing the idea of Christ as
King. Working with other catechists, we
tried to get the children to think about what
sort of ‘king’ Jesus was from the gospel
stories we know: a ‘king’ who was born in a
stable instead of a palace; a ‘king’ who was
poor and wore very simple clothes and ate
simple food; a ‘king’ who walked on foot
everywhere; a ‘king who was humble and
washed the disciples’ feet, etc – in short, a
very different ‘king’ from what they know of
from fairy tales or history lessons. All was
well... until a little girl asked me with a very
puzzled expression on her face, “So... Jesus
was pretending to be a poor king on earth,
but He was allowed to be a rich king again
when He got to heaven?” I followed her eyes
and saw the drawing that we just handed
out: Jesus sitting on a regal throne in
heaven, with a jewelled crown on His head.
I can’t remember
what answer I
gave to that girl,
but I will never
forget that expe-
rience and how
much I learned
from her that day.
Out of the mouth
of babes! As much
as we catechists
wanted to make
the point that
Jesus was a “different kind of king”, we
didn’t think twice about how that drawing
shows Christ the same as any other king on
earth.
“Yes, I am a king” Jesus affirms in today’s
gospel; but He also says, “Mine is not a
kingdom of this world.” (Jn 18:36-37)
Jesus’ ‘sovereignty’, authority and greatness
is not about showing off riches and the
grandeur of a palace, or being seated in the
most majestic golden throne, with diamonds
and rubies on His head that will put the
Crown Jewels of England to shame, and
layers upon layers of finest silk as his robe.
Instead, Jesus “came into the world for
this: to bear witness to the truth” (Jn 18:37).
What kind of ‘truth’ does our King proclaim?
...that true riches is about giving, not
receiving, and the Kingdom of Heaven
belongs to the poor in spirit, the humble,
and those who are persecuted in the cause
of uprightness (cf. Mt 5:1-12).
...that true perfection is not about achieving
or not making mistakes, but about
forgiveness, and loving God and one another
unconditionally (cf. Mt 5:43-48+12:28-34).
...that true peace lies in trusting that our
heavenly Father knows our needs, that He
will provide for us and we needn’t worry
about tomorrow (cf. Mt 6:25-34).
...that true Life goes beyond our physical life,
and it’s about knowing and being in the
Love of God (cf. Jn 17:3).
I can go on and on, but you get the idea...
I pray that in this feast of Christ the King,
Christ may truly be the King of our heart
and our lives, the one who shows us the
truth and guides us in our lives!

JOCELYN ALICE LUXON, RIP
Please pray for the repose of the soul of
Jocelyn Luxon who sadly died on
Wednesday 21 November.
Jocelyn had been very involved in parish life
here at St John Vianney as a Reader, Art
Classes and many other activities. We
remember her and her family in our prayers.
May she rest in peace.

ENTRANCE/EXIT TO CAR PARK

entrance and exit. On exiting the center
gate gives a better view of traffic and also
you can be seen by the oncoming traffic.
The gates you normally use will be closed.
