Introduction/Warmer- Word Volleyball

10 mins  Ss are split into 2 teams and given a rectangle boundary with a line dividing the teams (ie one Teams 1x balloon
team on either side of the ‘court’
 Allow the students to practice hitting a blown up balloon from team to team. They may take as
many hits as they need to get the balloon over to the other side.
 Once the students can do this introduce the word component. The beginning team picks a
word and serves the balloon. Whoever hits the balloon next must say a word beginning with
the letter that the last word ended in e.g. if the first word was cat (ending in t) the next word
could be turtle (ending in e) and then ear (ending in r). They must say the word before they hit
the balloon.
 The team that hits the balloon out of the boundary or cannot think of a word before hitting the
balloon, allowing it to fall to the floor, loses the round and the other team scores 1 point.
 Variation: have 2 games going, a balloon blown bigger for the weaker ss (falls slower) and a
balloon not blown as big for the stronger ss (falls faster). This is best completed indoors with no
wind.
