Tilt up the cab or raise the hood.

Remove the crankcase hose and bend it to one side.

Remove the valve cover.

Remove the cover from the flywheel housing and install
the cranking tool.

Turn the camshaft using the cranking tool. Check the


camshaft with regard to wear on the camshaft lobes and
damage to the surfaces.

Unevenness can develop on cam lobe surfaces during


normal operation. This does not mean the camshaft
must be changed.

Figure 1 shows examples of scoring that will not affect


the running of the engine. Camshafts with this type of
scoring need not be changed.

Figure 2 shows examples of camshaft with material


damage that should not be reused.

Determine depth of wear by measuring between the
ridge at the edges of the camshaft lobe and the rocker
arm roller path.

The maximum permitted wear for the complete intake
valve camshaft lobe profile is 0.3 mm (0.012 in).

The maximum permitted wear for the exhaust valve
camshaft lobe profile is 0.3 mm (0.012 inch) for the
complete profile, with the exception of the small lobes
where maximum permitted wear is 0.1 mm (0.004 in).

The maximum permitted wear for the complete unit
injector camshaft lobe profile is 0.2 mm (0.008 in), except
between the basic circle and maximum lift, where the
maximum permitted wear is 0.01 mm (0.004 in).

Clean the contact surfaces of the valve cover. Apply a 2
mm thick bead of sealant to the mating faces between
the upper timing gear cover and the cylinder head.
Apply sealant on both sides where the cylinder head
and cover meet.

Note: The valve cover must be fitted within 20 minutes


after the sealant has been applied.

Replace the valve cover and tighten the bolts to the
torque given in “Specifications”, see group 20.

Install the crankcase ventilation hose.

Remove the cranking tool.

Lower the cab or close the hood.
