Student Response and Assessment Tools

Lesson Idea Name: Using Weather Instruments

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th
Content Standard Addressed: S4E4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to predict weather
events and infer weather patterns using weather charts/maps and collected weather data. a. Construct an
explanation of how weather instruments (thermometer, rain gauge, barometer, wind vane, and anemometer)
are used in gathering weather data and making forecasts.

Technology Standard Addressed: #3 Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool:

☐ Socrative ☐ iRespond ☐ Quizlet ☐ Plickers ☒ Kahoot! ☐ Office365 Forms
☐ Other:
URL(s) to support the lesson (if applicable):

Technology that student will use to respond to questions/prompts:

☐ Computer ☐ Hand-held student response system (like iRespond) ☐ Phone ☒ Tablet (such as iPad)
☐ Other wireless device (such as iPod Touch)
Type of session:
☒ Teacher-Paced ☐ Student-Paced
Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):
☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For this lesson, students are able to work together in groups to choose
the best option, allowing for collaboration and discussion. The students who are hearing impaired are able
to view the questions along with visual representations of the questions. The visual representations are
also best for students who are visual learners. If they would like, students can also choose to record their
answers on a separate device or a sheet of paper.

Describe the instructional activities that will occur PRIOR to the SRT activity and how you will introduce
the SRT activity.
At the start of the lesson, the students will be introduced to weather and meteorology. The Kahoot will be
used as a tool to activate background knowledge and assess what the students already know.
Describe the purpose of the SRT activity (check all that apply):
☒ Assess prior knowledge ☒ Anticipatory set (Create interest in a topic) ☐ To illuminate common
misconceptions ☐ Formative assessment of content knowledge (for purpose of differentiation and
mastery for ALL students) ☐ Summative assessment of content knowledge ☐ Test preparation
☐ Survey/Poll ☒ Discussion starter ☐ “Homework” collection ☐ Other (please explain):

Briefly describe what will happen DURING the SRT activity:

During the SRT, students will either work independently or in groups to answer the questions from the
Kahoot. Between each question, the teacher will ask the students to explain why they chose that answer and
then have a discussion as to why that is the correct answer. The activity will last 10 to 15 minutes.

Type of questions/prompts used in this activity (check all that apply):

☒ Multiple choice ☐ Multiple select ☐ True/False ☐ Yes/No
☐ Short open-ended response or fill-in the blank ☐ Longer open-ended response

If you are unable to provide a working sample of your questions, please list them below (8-10):

Right/Wrong answers: Will there be right/wrong answers to these questions?

☒ Yes ☐ No
☐ Mixed (Some will have correct answers, other will not.)
Immediate corrective feedback: Will you pre-select correct answers to some of all of the questions and
display correct response to the class after the SRT activity?
☒ Yes
☐ No
Why or why not? Because the activity is only a pre-assessment.

Describe what will happen AFTER the SRT activity?

After the Kahoot, the class will be divided into groups and each group will be assigned a weather
instrument to explain to the class.

How will the data be used?

The data will be used to assess what the students know about these particular weather instruments and how
much they know. It will be used by the teacher to assess what needs to be taught in depth and what does not.
This activity will not be graded. The whole class will see what answers students missed and how many
students answered what.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity.

This is a new way to assess the student’s prior knowledge and to activate background knowledge. I hope this
is a successful introduction to activate student’s background knowledge.

Reflective Practice:
This lesson is helpful for the teacher and engaging for the students. It piques their interest and makes them
think about what they already know about the topic. To further extend the lesson, the Kahoot can be
expanded to include more aspects about weather and meteorology.
