The relief of the Iberian Peninsula presents many

challenges due to its altitude and the existence of several
mountain ranges: the Pyrenees, the Macizo Galaico and
the Cordillera Cantábrica. These geographical features
do not just make transportation difficult, but sometimes
they even hinder it. This presents a series of difficulties to
those trying to access the vast territories in the interior of
the Peninsula.
The main road network has twenty-one mountain
passes over 1,200 metres high, which help to pass
through the numerous mountain areas. Access to Europe
by land is almost limited to the edges of the Pyrenees,
which still act as a natural border.

1. Physical geography studies relief. Mark the correct statement about the importance of
physical geography when studying human geography:

A Physical geography is the most important branch of human geography.

B Physical and human geography are independent disciplines which have nothing in common.

C The physical environment doesn't affect human activity.

D Physical geography is important to understand the development of human activity.

2. Using the text and the information from the unit as a reference, describe the
peninsular relief is and how it influences human activity:

.................................................................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................................................................

.................................................................................................................................................................................

3. Spain has a rugged terrain. If you had to travel a long distance by car and cross a
mountain pass, what would you use?

A A detailed atlas of Spain and a globe.

B A topographical map, to locate correctly where the mountain pass is.

C A thematic map of transport networks and a Geographic Information System (GIS).

D A topographic map and an aerial photograph to familiarise yourself with the relief you are crossing.

4. Answer the following questions about the concept of continent and the division
of the Earth in continents:

What is the definition of continent? .....................................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

Is Europe really a continent? Explain why: .........................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

How many continents is the Earth divided into? .................................................................................................................

...............................................................................................................................................................................................

5. Write the name of the continent where these land reliefs can be found:

– Atlas: .................................. – Zagros: .................................... – Southern Alps: ................................

– Orinoco: ............................. – Caucasus: ............................... – Guiana Shield: ................................

– Ganges: ............................. – Zambezi: ................................. – Sistema Central: .............................

6. Europe is one of the six continents on Earth. Mark the answer that includes the
main European geographical features:

A The Urals, the Pyrenees and the Great European Plain.

The Maasai people live in Kenya. They are livestock

farmers and practise extensive farming, although the
aridity of the dry season and the delay of precipitation
can led to difficulties for their herds and, as a
consequence, famines.
Other villages of the region make their living from
agriculture. The people that combine agriculture with
livestock farming live in villages and practise crop
rotation.
Together with these types of traditional agriculture
and farming, plantations are dedicated to different
crops, such as tea or coffee.

7. The Maasai live by traditional nomadic livestock farming. Mark in which type of
landscape they carry out this activity:

A The Maasai live in an Oceanic landscape with a temperate climate and abundant pastures.

B The Maasai live in the savannah, a landscape with high temperatures and a dry season.

C The Maasai live in a meadow, a landscape with a temperate climate and many pastures.

D The Maasai live in the rainforest, a landscape with an extreme climate and abundant vegetation.

8. Look at the climate graphs, relate them to the types of landscape on Earth
and explain their characteristics:

Type of landscape:

..........................................................................................................................
...........................................................................................................................
