Los Amigos de Fronteras is a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of disadvantaged
people living in several neighborhoods in Tegucigalpa and surrounding communities. With this goal in
mind, Los Amigos de Fronteras invited a team of medical professionals to Tegucigalpa to provide free
medical services to three neighborhoods during the month of September and October 2018. In addition,
this was the second year the medical team traveled to Comayagua and provided medical care to the
residents there.
The medical team consisted of 3 doctor specializing in family medicine and emergency medicine assisted
by 9 nurses and 3 additional administrative professionals helping in triage and in the pharmacy. In
addition, 4 local translators and the staff of Los Amigos de Fronteras were present to assist with
communications, transportation, and all other vital services.
The medical program ran from September 28th through October 4th. The medical screenings were held
in three local schools and a neighborhood in the Comayagua area. Two days were spent at the Fuerzas
Armadas School in the Modesto Rodas neighborhood, two days at Comayagua, and two days were spent
at the Santa Margarita school in the Zuaso Cordova neighborhood.
Data:
1380 patients were evaluated during the six days of medical screening.

Pharmacy
>1,800 prescriptions were dispensed to patients at no charge. Medications included drugs such as
antibiotics, antihypertensives, diabetic medication, as well as non-prescription items, such as Pedialyte,
acetaminophen, naproxen, various creams etc. Vitamins were dispensed to all patients except infants.
Pregnant women and nursing moms were given prenatal vitamins. Vitamins were not included in the
prescription count. If a person really needed a medication for a problem we did not have, the name of
the medication was written for them to show at their pharmacy.
Injections
53 injections were provided using corticosteroids for musculoskeletal disorders.
Laboratory
Laboratory tests were performed including urinalysis, fingerstick blood glucose, and pregnancy tests
performed onsite.
X-rays
Laboratory test and x-rays were reserved for emergency and urgent care because of limited funds.
