ME2100 Applied Thermal Engineering

Marks: 30 Jan-May 2018 Quiz-2 Time: 50 minutes

Use of Steam, air properties tables, psychrometric chart and calculator is allowed.
For air, R = 287 J/kg.K

1. At the beginning of the compression process of an air standard dual cycle, pressure
and temperature are 100 kPa and 298 K, respectively. The temperature at the end
of compression process is 700 K. After constant volume heat addition, temperature
reaches a value of 1500 K. Then, heat of 741.7 kJ/kg is added at constant pressure.
Using properties from air tables, determine (a) the compression ratio, (b) heat
addition (in kJ/kg) during constant volume process, (c) the maximum temperature,
(d) the net work (in kJ/kg) and (e) the thermal efficiency. (10 marks)

2. Air enters a gas turbine at 100 kPa, 300 K, which is optimally compressed in two
stages to 1200 kPa with intercooling between the stages, where air is cooled to
300 K. After compression, heat addition at constant pressure takes place. Air then
enters a single-stage turbine at 1400 K. Assume that the kinetic and potential energy
changes, and heat losses from compressor and turbine, are negligible. No
regenerator is present. Isentropic efficiency of turbine is 95% and that of the
compressor (both stages) is 100%. Determine (a) the thermal efficiency of the cycle
and (b) the thermal efficiency of the cycle, if only one compression stage (with 100%
isentropic efficiency) is present. Do the calculations using properties from air
tables. (10 marks)

3. An evaporative cooler is used to cool an

apartment on a hot day. Hot air at 40C, 1 atm
(1.01325 bar) and 15% relative humidity
enters the cooler at a rate of 1.416 m 3/s.
Saturated liquid water at 25C enters the wick
where it evaporates. A fan driven by an
electric motor rated at 100 W pulls the air
through the cooler into the apartment which is
maintained at 25C. Including the enthalpy of
water in the energy balance, and assuming
steady state operation, calculate (a) the mass flow rate of liquid water that must be
supplied to the cooler and (b) the relative humidity of air that enters the apartment.
The pressure may be assumed to remain constant and heat loss to the surroundings
may be neglected. You may take C p of air as 1.005 kJ/kg.K, if required. If you use
the chart for your calculations, you must show your work clearly on the same
and submit it along with your answer sheet. (10 marks)
