An eagle
soars

It all began at grassroots level and from that grounding Moorabool

now has a 2018 AFL Premiership player on the Honour Board.
Liam Duggan was picked up by the West Coast Eagles in the 2014
National Draft and has now notched up close to 70-games and
was part of the winning Premiership team against Collingwood
at the MCG last Saturday, wearing the #14 guernsey.
Duggan told Footy WA on Sunday after the big game it was still
pretty surreal and it “hadn’t quite sunk in yet.”
“I have this medal on and I am not taking it off,” he said.
And how did he pull up, body wise, after the game?
“The body is pretty sore, I am feeling it today.”
Duggan was a solid contributor throughout the match and
played an important role, taking a very courageous mark in front
of the seven-foot Collingwood ruckman, American Mason Cox in
the second quarter, one of the highlights of the game.
From Myrniong, Duggan now approaching just 22-years of age
started his football career at Bacchus Marsh. He was a member
of the Bacchus Marsh BFL Under 16.5 Senior premiership side in
2011 and recruited to the Western Jets after completing his junior
football with the Cobras.
Duggan has had a number of junior football achievements that
include winning the Herald Sun Shield with St Patrick’s College
(Ballarat), named in the Vic Metro National Under 18 team and
in 2014 was awarded the Ben Mitchell Medal at the AIS-AFL
Academy. Last year (2017) at the West Coast Eagles Presentation
Night Liam was awarded the Rookie of the Year medal; that same
year he received two-votes at the Brownlow medal count after
an outstanding performance against the Fremantle Dockers in
Round 17, with over 30-possessions.
Bacchus Marsh FNC President Adam Sutherland said Duggan is
a polite friendly guy who has time for everyone.
“He is a natural leader,” Sutherland said.
“From an early age Liam was winning B&Fs and then played in a
number of state teams, so yes he was always seen to be a definite
chance of AFL.”
And what did Sutherland observe as Duggan’s stand out talents
as a junior?
“Liam’s class and poise combined with his ‘team first’ attitude
were his strong suites,” Sutherland said.
And the club was very excited on him being part of the winning
team.
“We as a club were rapt for Liam as he has worked super hard to
get where he is and know how much achieving that flag with the
Eagles would mean to him, and his countless mates at the club.
We’re overjoyed for him,” Sutherland said.
“It is great both Nick (Suban) and Liam have achieved their
absolute dream of playing in an AFL grand final and we as a club
couldn’t be prouder.”

Poppies for the animals

Tilly Campey, 10-years-old, hand-made and sold 73 red felt

poppies for Anzac Day this year, raising money for the Ballan RSL.
Tilly’s target for the upcoming Remembrance Day on 11
November is 100 purple poppies, commemorating all animal
deeds and sacrifices in war.
“I just thought it would be a nice thing to honour the animals as
well as the humans,” says Tilly.
From the horses who carried soldiers in the Boer War, to Simpson
and his donkey, and to explosive detection dogs serving in
Afghanistan animals have played their part in combat.
Ballan RSL, in partnership with the Ballan and District branch of
the CWA, put a call out for knitted, crocheted or crafted poppies
for an installation to cascade down the front of the Ballan Post
Office behind the cenotaph on Inglis Street for Remembrance Day.
Tilly can’t knit so hand-crafting purple felt poppies will be her
personal contribution.
The Bacchus Marsh Grammar student plans on making poppies
“mostly on the weekend and during the school holidays or after
school on Monday and Tuesdays,” saying these are her only two
free nights.
In her rare spare time Tilly is an avid reader, citing J K Rowling
and Roald Dahl as favourite authors, a writer of stories and enjoys
swimming and dancing.
She will give some of her purple poppies to the CWA for the
installation while selling the remainder, to raise money for the Tilly Campey with some
Ballan RSL, at the October and November Ballan Farmers’ Market of the purple poppies
and in front of the Ballan RSL building on Remembrance Day. she is making to raise

Positive ageing online

A need for increased communication opportunities for older residents of Moorabool has led
to the creation of a new Facebook page.
The ‘Positive Ageing Moorabool’ Facebook page has been developed for older residents,
aimed at helping them be informed and connect to events and activities within Moorabool.
The page follows a recent survey and workshop for Moorabool Shire Council’s ‘Age
Friendliness project’, which highlighted the need for a greater communication and online
presence that caters to older residents, to increase participation and reduce isolation.
The page follows upcoming technology literacy opportunities from Council, which are
targeted specifically for older residents to increase confidence in using computers and other
devices.
For those already online, the ‘Positive Ageing Moorabool’ Facebook page is now live and
ready to follow and share with others.

Dear Editor,
I too attended the meeting (Mon 27 Aug) with the community
and the Board of Ballan Hospital.
I attended the meeting concerned as a past employee for
over 13 years, that had dealt quite intensely with the fantastic
community of the Moorabool West area, as the District Nurse.
I too listened to the many concerns raised that night and
must say that as the District Nurse, I heard many complaints
from the community regarding the running of the Hospital
and brought these up with management on many occasions,
long before this, but only to fall on deaf ears.
The CEO was well and truly set upon ‘raising an empire’
because like he once said in a staff meeting, “I’m the Captain
steering this ship”.
I would also like to point out that as stated by Paul Tatchell in
the meeting on the evening with the Board and community,
the reason why it was difficult to employ Registered Nurses
at Ballan Hospital was because of the “inability to transfer
entitlements such as long service leave.” That is incorrect in
my opinion; they needed to look at who was steering the ship
and the first mate!
Remember, people in the industry know each other and
poor experiences soon get around.

Ballan Hospital has always had a fantastic reputation,
an aged care facility with an equally fantastic urgent care
centre. Leave it at that. If it’s more aged care beds we need in
Ballan, the infrastructure is there. The 10 acute beds should
be licensed as aged care beds.
Upon reflection, the only thing that brings a smile to my face
is that both the captain and first mate are no longer at the
helm.

for this project to be placed on the Moorabool Shire Council
list of priorities for significant community developments. I
will also keep candidates for the State Election in the Seat
of Melton informed with a view to gaining support and
funding.
All residents and community groups in our town and
beyond could benefit by this exciting development proposal,
and private users of the centre would finally have a suitable
function venue locally.
I urge all of your readers to consider this proposal’s huge
importance to Darley and help us seek the necessary
assistance from Council to partner the Darley Park tenants
(user groups) in getting the support we need to progress
quickly.

Dear Editor,
My message to the community is to stay calm.
As just another community minded local observer of the
current financial challenges facing our Ballan Hospital
complex, I see it as just that, very complex.
The Community should understand that with such a vitally
important essential service such as this, which has grown so
rapidly over the past ten of its 70 years, the brakes will need
to be applied and some regrouping will always have to be
done.
In my opinion as a past long serving Board member, it is the
integrity of the Hospital that has to be protected at all times
and that is not being questioned at this point in time, but
rather its financial management that needs to be addressed.
A recent annual fundraiser at Myrniong for the hospital
raised over $25,000, with the event at capacity. There are
people who support the ongoing functionality of the
organisation and I urge everyone to stay positive.
A thought is to set up a team of consultants locally, rather
than paying two outsiders who know nothing about our
community’s hospital’s history.
Let’s unite and keep the doors open.

VicTrack response ‘off the rails’

VicTrack has responded to The
Moorabool News’ request for comment
regarding the refurbishment of Lal
Lal Railway station, where an $800,000
grant to restore the building has now
been put on hold by the government
body.
“VicTrack has been contacted by the
local Landcare Group and has had
high level discussions with Moorabool
Shire Council about the possible
refurbishment of Lal Lal Station. We’ll
continue to consider all proposals for
the future use of the building”, read the
statement.
VicTrack had previously informed the
Moorabool Shire Council and the Lal
Lal Railway Committee in September,
via a letter, that there was “no approved
budget” for the restoration and had
“made the decision to put all projects
that have not yet reached construction
on hold”.
The letter follows VicTrack’s review
of the proposal for the site, where it
met the selection criteria for its Vacant
Rail Buildings Program back in June.
Moorabool Council was to be head
lessee of the station.
The state government body also said
they are “aware that the Moorabool
Shire Council agreed to be head lessee
for the station building should any
refurbishment go ahead, however the
proposed project has not been formally
accepted onto the Community Use of
Vacant Rail Buildings Program.”

they’re still discussing the matter.
“Best place to put the horse is in front

“For consistency all communications
regarding this moving forward are to
be through Moorabool Council who
has been supporting us, which we truly
appreciate”, said Committee Secretary

convict

Smoking marijuana that led to theft of property saw a New
Zealand man front court in Bacchus Marsh.
Thomas Te Kaponga, a 21-year-old bricklayer, was found
guilty of theft from a residential address on the Ballan-
Daylesford road, Korweinguboora on April 2 of this year.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa Schoemaker told the court,
before Magistrate Henry Alsop, the accused and a co-accused
attended the scene and were looking through the window of
what was once a pub.
It was alleged the pair stole a Driza-Bone and a chainsaw
worth $730, leaving the scene and returning later on that
same day.
Prosecutor Schoemaker said the accused and co-accused
smashed a window with a rock upon returning to the
location, stealing another $649 worth of items.
When interviewed by police, the court heard Te Kaponga
denied everything that happened until CCTV footage was
shown. He then admitted to the allegations and also made
admissions of knowing the other people involved.
The accused’s lawyer said Te Kaponga “had been smoking
marijuana around the time of the offence all day, every day,
he didn’t remember exactly what had happened.”
“He has been in Australia for six years, having moved here
on his own from New Zealand,” the accused’s lawyer said.
“He admits that what he did was very immature, and he is
accepting responsibility by pleading guilty.”
Magistrate Henry Alsop stated Te Kaponga was up for
an indictable offence but was given 150 hours of unpaid
community work and ordered to pay $689.50 in restitution.

swooped are public spaces

not to harm native birds as
they are protected under the
Wildlife Act 1975,” Mr Ryan
said.
“If you do end up in an area
where there is a swooping
bird, try to protect your head
and eyes and move quickly
through the area.
“They are swooping to de-
fend their eggs and young
and if they perceive you to
be a potential threat, they
may swoop.
“DELWP encourages peo-
ple to share information
about swooping birds by
logging their encounter on
our swoop map,” Mr Ryan
said.

A Deer Park man has breached his
intervention order against his mother, when
attending her home.
The Bacchus Marsh Magistrate court heard
on Friday 14 September that on June 29 this
year Paul Wood was found in the lounge
room of his mother’s house.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Lisa
Schoemaker told the court Wood’s mother
suffered from dementia and it wasn’t until
July 4 the police attended the accused’s
home, asking him to cooperate and answer
their questions.
Snr Const. Schoemaker told Magistrate
Henry Alsop the accused replied, “I won’t
cooperate, I have nothing to say and I will
not go to court.”
“I am an ex-customs worker of 22-years,”
Wood’s shouted in the court.
“I know my rights far better than anyone
in this court. There are always two sides to
every story and mine has never been told.”
Wood’s aggression escalated as he told the
court about his struggle with mental illness
and his inability to obtain treatment.
“I went to my mother’s house the day that I
was in breach of the order because I wanted
to know if she remembered me,” Wood said.
“If you want to hang me for that, so be it.”
“I don’t have that power,” Magistrate Henry
Alsop replied.
Wood was told by Magistrate Alsop that he
was fined without conviction a sum of $200.
“I won’t pay it,” the accused replied
“Put me in jail I’ll learn way more skills. I’ll
learn how to cook ice, I’ll learn how to cook
MDMA, I’ll learn how to commit credit card
fraud,” Wood said angrily.
Magistrate Alsop concluded the accused’s
case before Wood could continue his
angered outrage, having no comment on the
aggressive outburst.

The Bacchus Marsh SES Unit
has held their 2018 Presenta-
tion Evening with the night
providing an important op-
portunity for the recogni-
tion of the significant service
provided to the Moorabool
Community by many of the
volunteers.
On the evening, more than
350 years of combined ser-
vice was acknowledged with
Service awards presented to
members for between five and
40 years of service.

Future farming ideas

ABC Rural Ballarat journalist Jess Davis hosted a recent
Farming Moorabool social networking night, where close
to 70 farmers and friends heard guest speaker Steve Taitako
from XM2 Industrial talk about the future impact of drones
on the way farmers grow our food.
Farming Moorabool, President Scott Young said the group
was pleased with the turnout.
He says guests were keen to learn more about Farming
Moorabool and its work with schools, public farmer forums
and interactive displays at festivals in the region.
“The feedback we get from the community is very positive,”
says Mr Young.
“We are constantly told how important it is to have a group
like Farming Moorabool out amongst the wider non-farming
community talking positively about the importance and
relevance of food production in a region that’s undergoing
significant change.”
Mr Young says Farming Moorabool wants to create a greater
awareness about the importance of the farming industry and
its role in the future of our economy and the sustainability of
the environment.
A raffle held on the night, generously supported by local
businesses and organisations, successfully raised $700 for

The Bacchus Marsh soccer club held their presentation night on Sunday 23 September for the Under 11s and up to the Seniors.Players and their
guests were entertained by a magician and a photo booth before players received their trophies. A fantastic night to the end of the season. The club
continues to grow each season with close to 250 players this 2018 season. The club will be running a summer’7 program up to Christmas and
registrations for next season’s winter program will open in February 2019.

B&F Award would now be named the Robert Fuller Medal.
Rob has literally had a lifetime association with the club
and on his return from boarding school in 1973 has won
the award an outstanding seven times. He has been a club
captain, a premiership player, junior and senior coach and in
recent years been assisting the senior coaches at training and
on match days. Apart from a period at the Ballarat Rebels,
Rob has had continuous service to this club since 1973.  A
truly well deserved recognition for this club stalwart.

to an open-for-all touch football season.
AFL 9s is the AFL’s official social version of the game,
described as a “fast, fun, free-flowing game” and is designed
for people of all ages, both male and female, and families.
The competition will run at ‘Siberia’ in Maddingley Park,
and will include activities such as free inflatables, food and
coffee vans and more.
Shayne Ward of AFL Victoria, who will be playing in the
matches, says the event is a brilliant way “to bring family
and friends together”, as it is “one of the key features of the
game”.
The game involves nine players on each team playing on a
smaller field. Each team comprises of 12-members, with at
least three females and two under 16-year olds. Mr Ward
says that girls are able score nine points for a goal instead of
the regular six to encourage gender equality in teams.
As there is no tackling or bumping, similar to ‘touch football’,
AFL 9s is suitable for everyone.

It has been a busy week for the club – three sections performed at their Calisthenics Victoria
State Championships held at Karralyka in Ringwood.
The Sub Juniors performed on Wednesday afternoon achieving the following placings 3rd –
Free Exercises and Highly Commended – Rods and Aesthetics.
The Juniors performed on Thursday evening and were awarded Highly Commended for the
following items – March, Clubs, Free Exercises, Rods, Aesthetics and Song & Dance. It was
the Tinies who achieved the best results for their four performances – Free Exercises – 2nd,
Rods – 2nd, Dance – Honourable Mention, Song – 2nd.
The Intermediates then followed up their performance from last week and are the first team
to compete at Westside Calisthenics Competition in 2018 – they were awarded the following
places March – 2nd, Clubs – 2nd, Free Exercises – Honourable Mention, Rods – Highly
Commended, Aesthetics – 3rd.
