TARGET LANGUAGE
MEANING (define the meaning and state how you will convey it)
Oxford University rejected her application. - to talk about things that happened in the past
and are finished
Life made if hard for her to live a normal happy life- talk about things that happened
regularly or frequently in the past
FORM
Aff
S+ vb -ed /irregular
PRONUNCIATION
The -ed past form can be pronounced in different ways depending on the final consonant sound
of the verb. There are three ways to pronounce -ed: /t/, /d/, /ɪd/
We use /t/ after an unvoiced consonant (p,k,f,gh,sh,ch,ss,c,x):helped, laughed, kissed, danced etc.
We use /d/ after a vowel or a voiced consonant (l,n,r,g,v,s,z,b,m): cleaned, offered, rubbed etc.
We use /ɪd/ after the sound /t/, /d/: wanted, needed.
WRITTEN RECORD
Students will receive a copy of the record of the meaning and form from the workbook (Real
English Grammar Pre-Intermediate)
Lott, Hester, Real English Grammar Pre-Intermediate, Marshall Cavendish, 2006, p. 24, 25
P1: Students may confuse the past simple with other tenses that they might know.
FORM
P1: Students may use the incorrect form of the verb (regular/ irregular).
S1: I will give them a set of irregular verbs that are usually used and put them into the lesson’s context,
through a fill-in the gap exercise.
e.g: The other tutor______ (think) he ____ (be) a bit strange and unfriendly;
S1.2: Another solution might be to extract two sentences from the text and elicit some questions.
e.g.: A year later she divorced him vs. She wrote 4 more books.
Which is the verb in the first sentence and which is the verb in the second sentence? - divorced and wrote.
What is the difference between the two verbs? - the one in the second sentence doesn’t have -ed at the
end.
Does anybody know why is that? - Yes/No (explain that this is an irregular verb. Explain what is an
irregular verb)
PRONUNCIATION
S1: I will help by pointing out the correct form and create drills that will further clarify the problem. If
time allows it, we will divide the class in two teams. Each team will receive three cards where there will
be the phonetic transcription of the -ed form. I project/ write some verbs and ask the team which one do
they think is the correct ending.
E.g: Loved. Which of the three sounds does loved make? Correct answer /d/.
