 A compound word is made of two words joined to form a new word. There are three different kinds of
compound words.
a. one-word compound or the close compound is written as one whole word.
b. two-word compound or the open compound is written as two separate words.
c. hyphenated compound is written with a hyphen separating the two words.

D. Guided practice
Read the paragraph. Identify the compound words. Identify its kind.
Janna loves to visit her grandmother in her farmyard on weekends. She loves to sit with her Lola Marta on a
rocking chair and watch the fireflies at night. Lola Marta always reads fairy tales to Janna before bedtime. She also
shows her how to cook pancakes in the frying pan. Janna proudly claims that she made forty-four cookies one
weekend and shared one-half of them with the vice-president of their homeowners’ club

Activity: Group pupils into 4. Distribute the following poems for them to read. Let pupils identify the compound
words used in the poem. Write these on the table given. Before the presentation of the compound words, the group will
read the poem to class.
