Problem 2:
A W12 x 72 of A36 steel has a length of 18 feet and end supported as shown.
Compute the design compressive strength for LRFD and sllowable compressive
strength for ASD.
AISC table properties for W12 x 72

Framing configuration
K = 0.80 rx  5.31 ry  3.04

L = 18 feet = 216 in

Note that
Kx  Ky
Then since for W shapes rx > ry, the critical buckling length will always
be KL/ry > KL/rx.

Hence Maximu KL/r = KL/ry =

216
0.8  56.842 < 200 therefore OK in accordance to minimum KL/r
3.04 which is a limiting value in actual practice

E 29000
4.71  4.71  133.681
Fy 36

Since 56.842 < 133.681, therefore use AISC Equation E3-2

Additional problem:
If the dead load is 175 kips, how much Live load is allowed using ASD? LRFD?

LRFD
DL  175
Pu = 1.2DL + 1.6LL

Pu  1.2 DL
LL  LL  229.192
1.6

ASD
Pa = DL + LL

LL  Pa  DL LL  208.704

Typically it is more advantageous in the economical sense to use LRFD than ASD
