“Burundians are playing a very important role in pushing forward our
mandate (of stabilizing Somalia). So, when we see senior officials coming to
visit (the country) and get information on what is taking place, it raises our
morale and the morale of our soldiers. And it is also an important
opportunity for us to discuss with senior officials about the realities on the
ground.”

“I also want to thank you as the commander of the Burundian forces and
particularly because we (AMISOM) have a very special place for Burundi and
Uganda because they were the first ones to come here. We really honour the
sacrifices they made even for other forces that came afterwards. The initial
work that was done by the Burundi and Uganda forces is very
commendable.”

“The Transition Plan is focused on ensuring that the SNA (Somali National
Army) is capable of taking over those areas that we are going to hand over to
them. So, the idea of condition-based transition plan is that they should be
able to come up with specific forces based on their own priorities, and (as a
result) we should be able to see how best they can (effectively) occupy the
spaces that we want to vacate.”
