1 Assalamualaikum and Good Evening
to all my students. As you all know
today we will learn on a new topic. So
I hope that you all are ready.
2 Before I start on my lecture let me
show you one picture.
So now I want you to tell me what the
first thing come a cross you mind
when you see the picture.
Can anyone give me the answer?
(student answer)
Thank you for the answer.
Yes, dirty hand and full with germs.
Germs that we cannot see through our
naked eyes.
3 My topic today is on Hand Hygiene.

4 My general objectives is :
• To teach the students why the
hand hygiene is very important
• To teach the student on how to
perform hand hygiene

And my specific objectives is :

• By the end of this session
students are able to:
- Understand when they have to
perform hand hygiene
- Understand the purpose of
hand hygiene
- Can perform hand rub and
hand wash
- Know the 5 moments

5 Let me ask you all one question.

How frequent you wash yor hands?
6 So why you think all the fuss about
hand hygiene?
• Most common mode of
transmission of pathogens is
via hands!!!
 Infections acquired in
healthcare
 Spread of antimicrobial
resistance

7 Let’s move to the next slide which is

on purpose of hand hygiene.
• To remove dirt, debris and
reduce microorganisms from
hands
• To reduce cross contamination
or infections
• To break the chain of infection
from patient to patient, from
patient to health care worker’s
and vice versa
• Image of cleanliness, credibility
of health care worker’s

8 Now we will see how many types of

hand hygiene that we have.
• Hand hygiene
– Performing hand
washing, antiseptic
hand wash, alcohol-
based hand rub,
surgical hand
hygiene/antisepsis
• Hand washing
– Washing hands with
plain soap and water
• Antiseptic hand wash
– Washing hands with
water and soap or other
detergents containing
an antiseptic agent
• Alcohol-based hand rub
– Rubbing hands with an
alcohol-containing
preparation
• Surgical hand
hygiene/antisepsis
– Hand washing or using
an alcohol-based hand
rub before operations
by surgical personnel

9 After you know the purpose and the

types now we will go to the next slide
on the benifits of hand hygiene.
• Reduced the frequency of
Healthcare Associated
Infections (HAI)
• Reduce the spread of multi-
resistant organisms
• Reinforcement of hand
hygiene helps to control
epidemics in healthcare
facilities
• Reduce costs related to HAI
• Could save over million lives!

10 What do you all think the cause of

poor adherence of hand hygiene?
It is because of :

 Hand washing agents cause

irritation and dryness
 Sinks are inconveniently
located/lack of sinks
 Lack of soap and paper towels
 Too busy/insufficient time
 Understaffing/overcrowding
 Patient needs take priority
 Low risk of acquiring infection
from patients

11 Let’s move to next slide.

So why do yo think that hand hygiene
is important among health care
workers?

WHY?

• Thousands of people die

everyday around the world
from infections acquired while
receiving health care
• Hands are the main pathways
of germ transmission during
health care
• Hand hygiene is therefore the
most important measure to
avoid the transmission of
harmful germs and prevent
health care-associated
infections

12 Who do you think suppose to practice

and do the hand hygiene?

WHO?

• Any health worker

• Care giver
• Person involved in patient care
needs to be concerned about
hygiene

13 After we know why do we need to

carry out the hand hygiene and we
know who suppose to carry out and do
no we must know when we need to
do.

WHEN?
 Before patient contact
 Before clean / aseptic task/
procedure

 After body fluid exposure risk

 After touching a patient
 After touching patient
surroundings

14 Now i will show you the picture on how

to do hand rub and hand wash.
