Mental Health in Libraries
Mental health awareness training is a frequent topic of
research and discussion within public libraries. Academic
library perspectives are lacking, however.

“The age at which most young people

are in higher education is also the age
of peak onset for mental health
problems”
Reavley & Jorm (2010)
• 20% of adults will experience a mental health issue in
their lifetime (NAMI)
• 50% of chronic mental illness begins by the age of 14,
75% by the age of 24 (NAMI)

Recognizing a mental
health concern

Wrapping Up
Differences in our responses and reactions are dependent
on our awareness, prior experiences, and personal
perceptions of mental health.

Take-Aways
• Mental illness is highly prevalent in the US – and is also
highly stigmatized
• Libraries are community hubs and attract a diverse
range of people
• Becoming educated about mental health can help
promote a culture that values mental health sensitivity
• Apply the mental health ABCs to provide on-the-scene
care
