Message from Chief Executive, Asia

Our world is under stress. We face acute population pressures, the demands of industrial growth and
the pains that accrue from rapid economic development. In Asia, this issue is particularly relevant
given that we are in the world’s fastest evolving region both economically and socially. Countries like
China and India have already raised the development stakes as their economies begin to rival those of
the West. The resulting impacts to communities and the environment are testimony to this situation.
For example, China’s total carbon emissions have already outstripped those of the US, making China
the world’s largest single emitter; and the depletion of natural resources in the rest of Asia has
reached levels of global concern with far-reaching implications. Sustainability is key to our survival if
we are to pass on a planet fit for future generations.

We at AECOM are working to tackle this challenge. Through our multi-disciplinary approach, we serve
our clients in many different arenas to develop sustainable answers for their needs. We take pride
in the fact that over the years we have fostered sustainability globally, as well as in Asia, within our
services and our operations, before many other firms had even considered sustainability as an issue.

Today, we are experiencing trends such as the loss of natural resources, climate change and
increasing waste quantities and we confront the possibility of irreversible change at a global scale if
nothing is done. Our team in Asia is pressing ahead to address the urgency of this problem. We apply
our local expertise and global insights to provide clients with professional sustainability solutions.
Within our service offerings to clients, we furthermore believe in ‘walking the talk’ by holistically
integrating sustainability into our operations.

We would like to take this opportunity to share with you our ideas on how we can achieve
sustainability together for now - and for the future.

Introduction
Asia is home to more than half of the world’s humanity. It
encompasses a broad range of diversity - geographically,
socially and culturally. The past few decades have seen
an unprecedented explosion of development in the region
through the growth of cities and infrastructure. While
this has enriched the living standards of many, we must
consider sustainability issues in the light of all this rapid
growth.

Climate change
Climate change is one of the gravest challenges of modern
times. The rising level of carbon dioxide – one of the main
greenhouse gases - in the atmosphere is a result of the
combustion of fossil fuels to meet our energy needs; and
the consequences are dire. Rising sea levels and climatic
disasters such as typhoons and flooding, on the one hand,
and catastrophic droughts on the other, are impacts we are
encountering in Asia. Scientific evidence indicates a direct
correlation between these occurrences and the rising levels
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Tackling the effects
of climate change will therefore require strategies of a new
kind.

Water Usage
Water resources are being exhausted for domestic
and industrial purposes resulting in water scarcities in
many regions of northern Asia and elsewhere. Growing
populations, agricultural demands, industrial use and
changing lifestyle patterns have all contributed to this
situation.

Located on reclaimed land, this hotel and resort project
offers luxury services to its guests and members while
harnessing sustainability practices. The aim of this project
was to design energy management systems according to
the layout of the buildings and their shapes which were
long, joint-less and asymmetric.

As building engineers to our clients, Rainbow Land

Holdings Ltd., we worked against a fast-track design and
construction program to develop appropriate and cost-
effective carbon solutions.

Our final designs included:

-- Heat recovery exhaust systems throughout the hotel
-- Individual room energy management systems so that
guests could control their own living spaces
-- Tinted windows and glass doors to reduce solar glare
-- Door sensors to switch air conditioning off when doors are
left open

Working with our client, we helped create a sustainable

Rainwater Harvesting and Reuse in Tinjan Dongli Lake

The Tinjan Dongli Lake development, located in Northern

community is collected to supply water to the wetland park
and for landscape irrigation. In addition, the community
can access this water source through a system of internal
canals.

As the design and planning consultant to the client, Cofco

Property Co. Ltd., AECOM developed a transport and energy
strategy to suit the community’s needs.

We prepared a transport circulation system siting each

dwelling within 800 metres from a public transport node
which acts as the focal point for access and where a variety
of transport services are available. Additional bus stops are
provided at spacings of 250 ~300 metres from the central
hub along local bus routes. To reduce vehicle congestion,
inhabitants are not allocated dedicated parking spaces
rather they have restricted parking permits. This allows
a significant reduction in parking spaces needed. Also,
businesses are allowed to use parking spaces for their
employees when residents vacate them during the daytime.

From an energy perspective, our passive energy designs

have been shown to reduce residential energy consumption
by nearby 20 percent over baseline levels. Community
energy infrastructure, using a combination of gas-powered
combined heat and power (CHP) and ground source heat
pumps, further provides a good compromise between
energy usage, CO2 emission reductions and fuel cost
savings.

The outputs of the project are a sustainable community

plan for the Houshayu community minimizing their impacts
from transport and energy.

and cost reductions of 40 and 30 percent respectively over
the baseline.
