Social Changes
Fashion
In the 1920s the fashion choices were very unique. Most females would wear
shorter low waist dresses with high socks and throw over jackets. Other woman
that wanted to feel a little rebellious or have a different type of attitude would
wear a sort of revealing clothing.

Guys would wear a type of slacks that would be paired


with a long sleeve shirt and a thin long sleeve type of
vest.
Sports
Very popular sports in the 1920s were American football, basketball, boxing, and
horse racing. Babe Ruth was a very popular baseball player that was especially
famous for hitting 714 home runs in 22 seasons. He started playing baseball in
1914 and played his last game in 1935.

He played for the Boston Red Sox and during


that time set a record for the most scoreless
innings.
Songs
In the 1920s a very popular type of music was Jazz. Some very popular jazz songs
are listed here:

“Bye Bye Blackbird”


Movies
In the 1920s movies weren’t extremely new but still not in color yet. One of the
most popular movies in the 1920s was a movie called “The Cabinet of Dr.
Caligari”. This was a movie that was popular because of its horror and mystery.

Fun Fact: Steamboat Willie first released in 1928.

❖ In 1925 there was a sudden outburst that
caused great comotion, ‘The 1925 murder
trial of Grand Dragon”
❖ Americans were in dismay and didn’t know
what to think
❖ KKK dwindled since the incident
The Immigration Act of 1924
❖ The Immigration Act was anticipated
since 1917
❖ To begin with, the law required
immigrants to pass a literacy test
❖ Immigrants had to pay increased taxes
❖ There was no entry to the U.S. if you were
born in “Asiatic Barred Zone”
❖ These laws wasn’t enough to restrict
immigration so William P. Dillingham

❖ When the quota system was embedded
there was only 350,000 visas available to
immigrants each year
Overproduction cause & effect
❖ There was mass overproduction

❖ Things were overproduced in many
areas

farmers had risked everything

❖ January 1920: 18th Amendment took effect
➢ Prohibits the manufacture, transportation, and
sale of intoxicating liquors.
➢ No real way to in enforce this amendment.
❖ May 19, 1921: Emergency Quota Act
➢ The quota determined a maximum number of
immigrants allowed to enter the United States
from each nation or region.
➢ This targeted immigrants from areas perceived to
be undesirable.

❖ October 29, 1929: Stock Market Collapse
➢ The American stock market collapses, signaling
the onset of the Great Depression. The Dow
Jones Industrial Average peaks in September
1929 at 381.17—a level that it won't reach again
until 1954. The Dow will bottom out at a
Depression-era low of just 41.22 in 1932.

➢ Coco Chanel was an amazing fashion designer and
businesswoman. Chanel's spirit sums up the essence
of the 1920s.
❖ Al Capone
➢ American gangster and leader of Chicago Outfit gang
during the Prohibition era.
➢ Nicknamed Scarface
Science and Technology
Inventions
❖ In 1920 America's first radio station was made. The name of the station was
KDKA.
❖ In 1921 the first band aid was made.
❖ In 1922 the first drive-thru restaurant was made named “Kirby’s Pig Stand”.
❖ In 1923 the first Traffic light was created after Garrett Morgan saw two cars
crashed he invented the traffic light.
❖ In 1925 the first Television was made by John Logie Baird.
Vaccines
Diphtheria was a plague among children that would include sore throat, loss of
appetite, and fever.

In 1921 206,000 kids got this sickness and 15,000 ended up dying because of it.

Before students were allowed to go into school they would line up and get shots
to help immune them from Diphtheria.

The Vaccine was called Diphtheria Immunization.


Scientists
In 1923 university of Chicago Arno. B Luckhardt discovered a use for Ethylene
gas. He discovered it was a colorless flammable gas with a faint sweet and musky
odor.

It is also used for an artificial way to ripen fruit.


Cars
1924 Oakland 6-54A
Also known as the “True Blue Oakland Six” was the first car to use an efficient
coloring mechanism that allowed paint to dry faster and gave it a better finish.
Even though it was never a very popular car, the 6-54A nevertheless reigned in
1924 because of its powerful engine and new style.
