“My priority and passion lies in mixing for bands. For me, the most important aspect in
any system is its power. The system that I require must be good and powerful, not just
loud. And it has to have a lot of headroom. Similarly, it doesn't matter to me whether
its a digital or analogue console, brands like Yamaha, Digi Design and Midas are all good
choices. When I am called upon to mix a system for a band, I don't want to play loud but
I need the power. It must have the punch.. I'm talking about nice and warm BIG sound.”
-John Rock, Singapore
“I still think more than anything, the trend is digital mixing consoles. Be they, small or
large format. If I was sitting here 10 years ago and we mentioned the word digital mixing
desks, I could leave it as a passing phrase because we still used analogue. But today,
everything is digital consoles. And the manufacturers know it, they are all trying to stay
one step ahead of their competitors. We've been very lucky to be part of this change
and development and we're very happy. Having said that, we've got 2 brands that we
use now, DiGico and Soundcraft. CADAC and SSL that have come up with very good 'live'
mixing consoles. So I still think that the digital mixing console is an area that is still moving
forward.”
- Robin Shuttleworth, Singapore
“Actually the important thing for me is the technology of a machine. Working in a theatre
with Arabic instruments, equipment like the microphones have to cater to these unique-
sounding instruments. I only want to work with high-end instruments and microphones
because these ensure power. It doesn't matter if it is a dynamic mic or condenser mic, as
long as it has a good response and gives me good and real sound quality. For this, I usually
look to brands like Shure and Neumann as they are some of the best brands in the world.
For speakers, we try to only use speakers with high SPL. In a venue, when you have 10
speakers and only need to use 4 because they have such high SPL, that is always good. It
is also good for touring because you can cover a very big area with less speakers and they
won't reach their peak so easily. For me, I prefer to use L-Acoustics, MeyerSound and Nexo
speakers.”
- Habib Al Srouji, United Arab Emirates

July - August 2014 77
“I would say the Avid S3L system and the QSC Touch Mix are the hottest trends in Audio
today, especially in Myanmar. They are the most compact and appropriate professional
audio gears for both broadcasting and entertainment industries. While the Avid S3L system
can share I/O across 2 or more systems as well as it can control Pro-Tools and other DAWs
with its control surface, the QSC Touch Mix can mix and edit parameters with the iPad
via Wi-Fi. According to the continuous development of Audio technology, consumers are
looking for the better quality, cost-effective, less-burden and secure products. The more the
manufacturers comfort the consumers, the more they are achieving.”
- Saw Frits Fredrick Kyaw, Myanmar
“One of the most promising trends in the audio sector has been the emergence of digital audio
networking. Traditional analogue distribution systems are plagued by an inherent complexity i.e.
the logical and physical connections are one in the same. This means that building complex and
flexible audio distribution systems is expensive and difficult. Digital audio networks do away
with these challenges by instead leveraging off-the-shelf Ethernet switches and cabling which
could mean utilizing the existing network which is already being used for control, data transfer,
etc.
Another area of interest is in step arrays or steerable arrays. In this configuration, the speakers
are flown vertically, but each unit has the ability to be tilted completely independently-
hence the name 'step array'. This enables a wave front that has the desired curvature from
a perfectly vertical cluster. Because of the minimal cluster volume this configuration offers
maximum freedom on where it is hoisted.
Step arrays are typically designed such that they can be connected quickly to create longer clusters. For example, with the
K-Array KH8 step array, a 12-unit cluster can be hoisted by a single person in under 10 minutes. The range of applications
for step arrays are numerous. Because of their ability to blend into the surrounding and since they can operate in
venues that are highly reverberant, Step Arrays are ideal for deployment in places like houses of worship, transportation
terminals etc.”
- Dave Wooster, United Kingdom
“Show control and show control interfaces are really picking up. It’s not really just a sound
thing but it integrates sound, lighting, video and everything else, into a full show. Getting
things synced up to trigger on cue without human error is a big deal. Everything is already
pretty much digital so getting all these various systems to natively work together in a
simple intuitive way would be the next biggest thing.”
