Vocabulary Words – 4th Grade 2009-1020

Vocabulary Homework:
 Every night practice saying the words at least 5 times. You should
be able to read the list of words in about 10-15 seconds by the end
of the week.
 Tuesday nights – Write each word and its definition two times
each.
 Thursday nights – Write each word in a sentence. ALL
SENTENCES MUST HAVE AT LEAST SEVEN WORDS IN
THEM. NO SENTENCE MAY BEGIN WITH THE WORD “I.”

Week 1 – synonyms (A word that means the same as another word.)

Week 4 – antonyms (A word that means the opposite of another word.)

Week 5 – Compound Words (A word made up of two smaller words put


together.)
1) driftwood – wood floating on a body of water
2) beanstalk – the stalk on which beans grow

4) quicksand – a loose sand and water that gives way under weight
5) cardboard – a stiff, heavy paper
6) textbook – a book used to learn about a subject
7) junkyard – a place for the collection and storage of trash
8) landmark – a building or place that marks an event
9) sunburn – inflammation of the skin caused by too much sun
10 gingerbread – a kind of cake or cookie made with ginger
Week 6 – Homophones (A word that sounds like another word but has a
different meaning and a different spelling.)

2) bore – an uninteresting person
3) sweet - having the flavor of sugar
4) suite –a group of rooms that are connected
5) vein – a vessel that carries blood to your heart
6) vain – someone who is extremely proud
7) metal – a substance such as iron, copper, silver, lead or brass

Week 7 – Homographs (A word that is spelled that same as another


word but has a different meaning and sometimes a different
pronunciation.)
1) prune – a dried plum

6) Ferris wheel – a ride with seats hanging from a large wheel that turns
(Named after George Ferris.)

8) limerick – a funny five-line poem (Named after a place in Ireland.)
9) tweed – a woolen cloth made with two or more colors of yarn (Named
after the Tweed River in Scotland.)
10 jovial – a person who is jolly (Named after Jove, a Roman god also
called Jupiter.)

1) mustang – a wild horse (Spanish)
2) avocado – a tropical fruit that grows on trees (Spanish)
3) patio – an outdoor space used for relaxing near a house (Spanish)
4) rodeo – a show with horseback riding and roping (Spanish)
5) caboose – the last car on a freight train (Dutch)
6) waffle – a breakfast cake made from batter (Dutch)
7) sleigh – a kind of sled (Dutch)

Week 11 – Clips (A word that has been shortened or clipped.)
1) deli – a store that sells prepared foods (short for delicatessen)
2) condo – an apartment that is owned instead of rented (short for
condominium)
3) disco – a nightclub where people go to dance (short for discotheque)
4) mayo – a sauce that people use on sandwiches and salads (short for
mayonnaise)
5) vet – a doctor for animals (short for veterinarian)
6) gas – a fluid used as fuel (short for gasoline)
7) gym – a place for sports and exercise (short for gymnasium)
8) flu – an illness that causes high temperatures and aches (short for
influenza)
9) dorm – a building at college where students live (short for dormitory)
10 drape – a covering over a window (short for drapery)

Week 12 – Blends (A word formed when parts of two words are


combined or blended together.)
1) moped – a bicycle with a motor (motor and pedal)
2) brunch – a meal that combines breakfast and lunch
3) smash – to shatter something (smack and mash)
4) smog – a fog that is polluted (fog and smoke)
5) heliport – something from which helicopters take off and land
(helicopter and airport)
6) cheeseburger – a hamburger with cheese
7) twirl – to turn around (twist and whirl)
8) motel – a hotel for motorists (motor and hotel)
9) telecast – what is shown on t.v. (television and broadcast)
10 chortle – a type of laugh (chuckle and snort)

Week 13 – Coined Words (When something new is invented it needs a


name. A made-up name is called a coined word.)
1) astronaut – a pilot of a spacecraft.
2) skyscraper – a very tall building
3) suburb – a community outside a large city
4) nylon – a material made from chemicals
5) hatchback – a car with a hatch in the back
6) takeout – prepared food that you take home to eat
7) jazz – music with strong rhythm and an accented beat that falls in
unusual places
8) monorail – a train that runs on a single track
9) laptop – a small portable computer
10 infomercial – a TV program that gives information and also sells a
product

Week 14 – Word Stories (Many words have interesting stories about


their origins.)
1) panic – a sudden and unreasonable fear (The ancient Greeks thought
the god Pan made frightening noises in the woods.)
2) vandalism – the destruction of valued things (This word comes from
the name of a tribe that sacked Rome in 455 – Vandals.)
3) flashy – something that is colorful and stands out (Gypsies who
dressed in bright clothes lived in an English village called Flash.)
4) popcorn – a food made by heating kernels (When corn grains explode,
they make a popping sound.)
5) gargantuan – extremely huge (A book by a French author was about a
giant called Gargantua.)
6) jeep – a powerful car with a four-wheel drive (A General Purpose
vehicle in the army was called a GP.)
7) china – a fine pottery used to make dishes (Dishes made of fine
pottery first came from China.)
8) funny bone – the place where a nerve passes your bended elbow (The
nerve passes through your humerus bone, the bone in the top part of
your arm. Get it? Humerus? Humorous?)
9) pineapple – a fruit that looks like a pinecone (The name of this
tropical fruit means “apple of the pine.”)
10 eavesdrop – to listen in on someone’s conversation (From Iddle
English the evesdrop is a place where water falls from the eaves of the
house. A person listening in would stand behind that area to hear what
was being said.)

Week 15 – Newspaper Jargon (The special vocabulary used by people


who work at certain jobs is called jargon.)
1) dummy – a model of how a page will look
2) masthead – the section of the newspaper that lists the names of a
newspaper’s publishers and editors
3) beat – the subject that a report covers
4) scoop – if a newspaper publishes a big story before anyone else, it’s a
scoop
5) bleeds – when a picture goes to the edge of a page
6) crop – if you cut off part of a picture, you crop it
7) widow – a word on a line by itself at the end of a paragraph
8) headline – the title of a story in a newspaper
9) typo – a mistake in a printed word caused by hitting the wrong letter
key
10 stringer – a reporter who is not on the newspaper staff but sends in
stories

Week 16 – Funny Words


1) poppycock - nonsense
2) slugabed – someone who is lazy
3) bamboozle – to trick someone
4) scalawag – a rascal or a scamp
5) polliwog – a tadpole (frog in a very young stage)
6) ballyhoo – an uproar about something
7) dillydally – waste time
8) hobnob – on familiar terms with someone
9) bonkers – crazy
10 gobbledygook – is writing or speaking that is long and windy and hard
to understand

Week 17 – Prefixes super, dis, pre, semi, uni (A prefix is a word part that
is added to the beginning of a word. A prefix changes the meaning of the
word.)
super – more than uni – one dis – not; away
pre – before semi - half
1) supermarket – a large food store
2) superhuman – someone who shows extra strength or power
3) displease – to annoy someone
4) dishonest – a person who cheats or lies
5) preview – to see something in advance
6) prehistoric – before recorded history
7) semicircle – half a circle
8) semiprecious – jewels that aren’t as valuable as real ones
9) unicycle – a vehicle with one wheel
10 unicorn – an imaginary animal with one horn on its forehead

Week 18 – Prefixes, non, en, multip, post, trans (A prefix is a word part
that is added to the beginning of a word. A prefix changes the meaning
of the word.)

1) nonfiction – books that are about real people and events
2) nonstop – to not stop along the way
3) enrage – to make someone very angry
4) endanger – to put someone in harm’s way

8) postscript – something added to the end of a letter after the signature
9) transcontinental – means across the continent
10 transplant – to move something from one place to another

Week 19 – Suffixes – ship, able, ous, hood, ty (A suffix is a word part that
is added to the end of a word. A suffix changes the meaning of the
word.)
-ship and –ty – condition of being able – that can be

1) kinship – related by blood
2) leadership – the ability to lead
3) remarkable - special
4) profitable – something you can make money on
5) envious – jealous or wanting what someone else has
6) joyous - happy
7) brotherhood - fellowship
8) neighborhood – an area in a community
9) frailty - weakness
10 royalty – being royal
Week 20 – Reading Words
1) genre – a type of text (fiction, non-fiction, play, poetry, etc.)
2) poetry – a piece of literature written in verse
3) persuasive – text that convinces a reader to believe something
4) non-fiction – factual information about real people, places or events
5) simile – a comparison between two unlike things using the words like
or as (He is a strong as an ox.)
6) alliteration – repetition of the first sound in words (Silly Sally sang.)
7) dialogue – characters’ conversation in a story
8) foreshadowing – giving a sign or suggestion of what will happen later
in a story
9) metaphor – a word for one idea or thing that is used in place of
another to suggest a likeness between them (The ship plows the sea.)
10 narrator – the one telling the story

Week 21 – Reading Words


1) script – the text of a play, broadcast or movie
2) personification – a figure of speech in which an object has the
qualities of a person (The dog read the book.)
3) hyperbole – a figure of speech that exaggerates the truth (I am
starving.)
4) stanza – a part of a poem with two or more lines
5) theme – the big idea or message of a story that connects the
characters, setting and plot
6) caption – a brief explanation that describes an illustration or
photograph
7) glossary – a list of words and their definitions often found at the back
of the book
8) index – an alphabetized listing of terms or subjects that gives the page
number where it can be found in the story
9) italics – a style of printing with letters slanted to the right
10 headings – titles within an article that identify each new topic
Week 22 – Greek word parts photos, tele, phobos, syn, phone
photos – light tele – far away, distant phobos – fear
syn – with, together phone – sound
1) photograph – picture created by light (photo means light; graph means
to draw or write)
2) photosynthesis – (photo means light; syn means together; thesis
means putting) – the process by which plants use light to create food
3) telescope – an items used for looking at distant objects
4) telegraph – a system used to transmit messages from a distance
5) claustrophobia – fear of closed places
6) hydrophobia – (hydro means water) fear of water
7) synthesis – combining several things together
8) synonym – two words with the same meaning
9) sympathy – to feel what someone else may be feeling
10 microphone – an item used to record small sounds

Week 23 – Latin word parts pro, ad, pes/pedis, dens/dentis, corpus


pro – for/before/forward/in place of ad – to/toward/near/next to
pes/pedis – foot dens/dentis – tooth corpus - body
1) profess – to admit something
2) prologue – the section before the beginning of a book
3) adequate – even with or equal to
4) admire – to look at with wonder or amazement
5) pedestal – the foot of a column
6) pedicure – professional care and treatment of the feet
7) dentist – a tooth doctor
8) denture – set of false teeth
9) corpse – dead body
10 corps – military division organized as a body (marine corps)

Week 24 – Long o/oa; ai; ee; ea


1) cocoa – a beverage made by mixing cocoa powder with water or hot
milk
2) bay – a small body of water off the shoreline
3) delay – to postpone or put off until later
4) Mayflower – the ship in which Pilgrims sailed from Southampton to
the New World in 1620
5) plain – not very pretty
6) kneecap – the protective covering for the knee
7) teasing – to irritate or annoy
8) repeal – to withdraw officially
9) wealthy - rich
10 threaten – to say that you will harm someone

Week 25 – Final e rule


1) gale – a very strong wind
2) rescue – to save someone from danger
3) type – a kind or sort of (classifying)
4) excite – to stir up emotions
5) describe – to tell about in detail
6) device – an invention for a particular purpose
7) abode – a place where someone lives
8) orate – to make a formal public speech

6) saunter – to stroll or walk along in a casual way
