What is planning?

) Planning is the process that involves


defining the organization’s goals,
establishing an overall strategy for
achieving those goals, and developing a
comprehensive set of plans to integrate
and coordinate organizational work.
) Planning can be formal or informal

) Provides direction to managers and non-


managers so that they can coordinate
activities and cooperate with each other.
) Planning reduces the impact of change

specific performance goals are jointly
determined by employees and their
managers, progress toward
accomplishing those goals is periodically
reviewed, and rewards are allocated on
the basis of this progress.

Steps in the MBO Process
1. Develop the organisation’s goals and strategies
2. Establish specific goals for departments
3. Dept managers jointly set specific objectives for
their dept with their managers
4. Specific objectives are jointly set with all dept
members
5. Action plans are formulated and agreed upon by
managers and employees
6. Implement the action plans
7. Review progress periodically
8. Appraise performance
