Guideline of MIS 205 Course Project

Summer 2017 Semester

IMPORTANT: WHILE SUBMITTING THE REPORT, YOU NEED TO SUBMIT TWO HARDCOPIES
TO LECTURER (ONE FOR THE LECTURER AND THE OTHER FOR DEPARTMENT
REPOSITORY). YOU ALSO NEED TO SUBMIT SOFTCOPY FOR RECORD AND PLAGIARISM
CHECKING PURPOSE. LECTURER WILL USE NSU TURNITIN SOFTWARE PROVIDED BY NSU
LIBRARY IN CHECKING PLAGIARISM.

Project Title: Information Systems in Organization

PROJECT DESCRIPTION & REQUIREMENTS:
In this course project you are expected to form a group of 5 members. Your group’s
first task will be indentifying any practical example of information systems in any
organization you are familiar with (for example, you can select North South
University Course Registration System as you are familiar with both the information
systems and the organization). Please make sure, before selecting the systems you
are consulting with your lecturer. Your lecturer will help you to select such
information systems which can be used to fulfill all the five requirements below.

You need to write a formal report which includes following requirements within 2000
words (be aware that plagiarism will be checked and if found the group will be
heavily penalized!):

Requirement 1: Role of Information Systems in Organization

● Describe the five major functions of that information systems.
● Your selected information systems is mainly supporting which organization
layer (lower level, middle level or top level)? Justify your choice.
● Describe the three major benefits of having that information systems.

Requirement 2: Apply Systems Approach to Understand Information Systems

● After analyzing the systems —
o Briefly describe the inputs which are taken by that information systems.
o Briefly describe the processing which transforms the taken inputs.
o Briefly describe the outputs which are generated by that information
systems.

Requirement 3: Information Systems and Web Technologies

● If your selected information systems uses web technology,
o Which form of web technology is being used in the information systems
(internet, intranet or extranet)? Justify you choice.
o How the web technology is helping the information systems to achieve
organization’s objectives?
● If your selected information systems does not use web technology,
o List three reasons why the information systems does not use web
technology.
o Do you suggest the organization should incorporate web technology
with this information systems? Justify.
Requirement 4: Technical Understanding
● What type of database is used in the information systems? If you have the
information, please mention which database management systems package
is used in the managing the database.
● Mention two examples of reports generated by that systems.
● Mention one data mining example which can be done using the database.
● Analyze the database to list 5 entity names and 5 attributes of each entity.

Requirement 5: Information Systems Security

● Mention and briefly describe five information systems threats which can
negatively impact the systems.
● From those identified threats, select two which are most dangerous and most
likely to cause severe damage.
● For those two, suggest security management tool which can prevent or
manage those threats.

While responding to these requirements, please make sure you do substantial group
work.

FORMAT OF THE REPORT:

The suggested format of the report is as follows—
▪ Paper Size: A4
▪ All Margin 1cm
▪ Font size 12, style Times new Roman
▪ Footer: Page number in each page
▪ Line spacing 1.5 lines
▪ Correct Citation and referencing (if applicable)
▪ Correct grammar and spelling
▪ Use formal cover page
▪ Include executive summary (no more than 200 words); table of contents and if
applicable then reference (This will not contribute towards your word count)
▪ Separately provide one copy of the “Contribution Table” (print the last page of
this Course Project Outline and fill the table and take sign from the group
members)

By signing on Table 1 each member acknowledges his or her agreement with the stated
contribution to the overall report made by each individual.

Table 1: Membership and Individual Contribution.

Use the following “grade” to state each member contribution to the total effort
● A = very good contribution, the group member went above the expected participation
level.
● B = good contribution, the member participated as expected and was diligent in
performing the assigned tasks.
● C = less than satisfactory contribution, the member participation and contribution was
less than the average for the group.
● D = the member had minimal participation on the group effort, shown lack of
commitment to the group and significantly increased other members’ workload.
● E = the group member did not contribute at all to the team.

The group shall agree on the contribution level for each group member. Your signature on
Table 1 indicates your agreement with the assessment of contribution. Reaching agreement
is part of the exercise. In filling up the table lecturer is expecting highest level of ethical
standard from the group.

To encourage the teams to strive to perform as a team, penalties will be assigned to

students that perform below the minimum expected level (see Table 2).
