Literature Standards (Fiction)
RL 3.1:
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate
understanding of a text, referring explicitly
to the text as the basis for the answers.
RL 3.5:
Refer to parts of stories, dramas, and
poems when writing or speaking about a
text, using terms such as chapter,
scene,and stanza; describe how each
successive part builds on earlier sections.
Informational Standards (NonFiction)
RI 3.1:
Ask and answer questions to demonstrate
understanding of a text, referring explicitly
to the text as the basis for the answers.
 
 
● Ask and answer basic questions
(who, what, where, when) in
regards to a story.
● Describe how and why events in a
story happen. Locate and explain
the explicit details that are needed
to answer a question.
● Infer details not directly stated in
the story.
● Identify chapters, stanzas, or
scenes within a literary text.
● Paraphrase chapters, stanzas, or
scenes when discussing literary
elements with others.
● Explain how the information in
chapters, scenes, or stanzas
advanced the plot, story line, or
theme of the work.
● Analyze the relationships between
successive chapters, scenes, and
stanzas.
